PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD)Keeping a healthy diet can be a challenge on its own, and with COVID-19 disrupting routines, it could be even harder.

Even as the state inches towards reopening its still not a full return to regular life for families. Nutrition expert, Dr. Amanda Newell says its a good time to get into healthier eating habits.

Newell says families should try to stay on a regular eating pattern as much as possible and incorporate fruits and vegetables as much as possible. She says you can make a game of it for the whole family, especially little ones.

Making it fun for kids, getting them involved where its not just this is what youre eating and deal with it, letting them have a little bit of say-so and picking some items, Newell said.

She says when shopping for healthier food options to consider buying from local farmers or stores to help yourself and the community. Newell also says you can always treat yourself to snack food, its important to remember portion control.

Watermelon- 2 cups (cubes)

Mint leaves- 5-6

Method:

Step 1. Deseed the watermelon and put it in a juicer.

Step 2. Wash the mint leaves and add to it. Now blend the two together.

Step 3. Add crushed ice and lemon juice. Make sure there's no seed in the blend. Add sugar in this step, if needed. Blend again.

Step 4. Pour the slush in a margarita glass and garnish with a few finely chopped watermelon slices, a mint lead and a lemon wedge.

You could lower your risk of an early death by eating a healthy, balanced diet, including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, said the NHS.

Regular exercise is also crucial for boosting your lifespan. Everyone should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.

But making some small dietary changes could also help to increase your life expectancy.

One of the easiest ways to boost your life span is to eat spicy foods every day, it's been revealed.

"Some evidence from other studies suggests the bioactive ingredients in spicy foods such as capsaicin may lower 'bad' cholesterol and triglycerides and improve inflammation," said researcher Dr Lu Qi.

Harvard Medical School added: "If you'd like to add more chilli pepper to your diet, stick with something healthy, such as turkey chili or lentil pilaf, and skip the greasy tacos.

"But be careful: spicy foods may trigger an increase in gastric acid in some people, causing heartburn."

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of an early death by eating avocados, nutritionists have claimed.

The fruit reduces the amount of 'bad' cholesterol in the body, while also boosting the amount of 'good' cholesterol.

A build-up of cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of heart disease. Heart attacks are a symptom of heart disease.

Everyone should consider eating half of an avocado three to four times each week.

The plan, which is outlined in The Dubrow Keto Fusion Diet book, allows both fruit and alcohol, which is something the Botched star was happy about considering Heather told Us he hated keto.

I was down on keto because you really cant have fruits and vegetables. Its so low carbohydrate that if you eat one apple, youre out of the traditional ketogenesis diet, so its not sustainable, the reality star argued. But what this does, it allows you to have a reasonable amount of carbohydrates each and every day, allowing you fruits and vegetables, but it sends you into a ketosis during the day, and then out of it at night, and then back in it the next day.

According to Terry, this diet is similar to keto in that it enables your body to use fat for fuel during the day, while still allowing you to have some of the popular foods you crave at night, which would traditionally be forbidden on the keto diet.

In other words, certain cheats are permitted on the Dubrow Keto Fusion Diet, such as alcohol. How could you live without that? Heather quipped. That was one of the things we didnt like about the keto diet.

Terry added that this diet, which is a follow-up to 2018s The Dubrow Diet, also allows other foods that are typically not permitted on keto. Weve made it very easy, he said. Its a very simple plan that allows you to eat during the day as opposed to fasting all day, but allows you to have fruits and vegetables also.

Heather compared the duos diet to a popular exercise technique, adding: Youve got to think of it sort of like high-intensity interval training, which were all very used to when it comes to exercise. You raise and lower your heart rate and thats how we train the body. Its the same exact idea, is that were coming in and out of ketosis, training the body that way.

While the Real Housewives of Orange County alum clarified that her children with Terry twins Nicholas and Maximillia, 16, and daughters Katarina, 13, and Collette, 9 dont stick to the diet, they do follow a similar eating plan when theyre home. When it comes to the family, theyre not on a program per se, but so many of the meals in here are family-friendly that its just easy, and we did it that way on purpose, the Bravo personality told Us. Not that my 9-year-old is on The Dubrow Keto Fusion Diet, but she enjoys many of the dishes we make.

Lindsey Vonn Reveals What She Eats in a Day, How Her Diet Has Changed Since She Retired From Skiing – Us Weekly

Lindsey Vonn has made some significant changes to her diet! When the professional athlete was competing, she typically consumed things like oatmeal and Red Bull, but now that shes retired from competitive ski racing, Vonn is able to have a bit more fun with her food.

When I used to race it was a little more challenging because were always staying at hotels and you never know what youre going to be able to get, Vonn, 35, told Delish in a video interview on Wednesday, May 27. In the morning, usually, I tried to eat eggs and oatmeal, or in Europe they have muesli, which is like grains and fruit.

Once she got up on the mountain and was ready to ski, Vonn said she would usually snack on a protein bar, but recalled being too nervous to eat much more than that. She did, however, drink a Red Bull prior to each race for a little bit of extra energy.

After each race, when it was time to replenish and refuel, the Minnesota native would eat a banana and a protein shake. I just always ate what I could find. Whatever was available, Id put in my mouth, she added with a laugh.

Dinner was a balance between protein, carbs and veggies, and Vonns ideal meal was salmon, rice and vegetables, which is what she usually ate prior to a race. In fact, according to the former World Cup alpine ski racer, she feasted on the healthy fish the night before she won a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Her pre-race eats also included banana bread, which she made herself. I won the Olympics on banana bread and salmon, she quipped.

As for foods that were off limits? Vonn explained that she avoided meat while competing. No steaks, no burgers. Your body is spending a lot of energy trying to digest it instead of using your energy to recover and rest and get ready for a race, she said. I never ate meat the night before a race.

Pasta was another food that the gold medalist avoided. As she put it: I think too much carbohydrates is not good.

These days, Vonns diet is a bit more relaxed. My eating has definitely changed a lot since competing, it doesnt really look anything like it used to, she dished. I still try to eat really healthy, but I definitely let myself indulge a bit more.

Which bike races, marathons and spartan races will still happen in Utah this summer – fox13now.com

Summertime is almost here, which is usually a big time for marathons and bike races. Some will not be going forward, as usual, this year.

It was Preston Johnsons first year training for international races as a sponsored athlete.

Its addicting, you know its more than just running its a way of life, said Johnson.

The pandemic caused companies to drop his sponsorship, but Johnsons motivation to keep running remains.

My schedule has more or less turned into, why do I love running, why am I doing this, said Johnson. Its not motivated, anymore, by the big race down the road.

Johnson shares his motivation with a group of 10 to 20 people, in a running club he created, that meets every Wednesday.

Whether its for mental health, physical health, to lose weight or seeing how far they can push themselves, Johnson said.

Ashleigh Steed with Utah Running said their sales in trail gear has increased since their doors re-opened.

There are a few trail races going on in the upcoming weeks, Steed said.

Steed was training for the Ogden Marathon before it was rescheduled for the fall. It would have been her sixth time running the race thats a Boston Marathon qualifier.

It was really just kind of devastating, said Steed. Thats what gets me through the winter is having something to look forward to.

The Salt Lake City Marathon was held virtually.

Others, like the Deseret News Marathon, were canceled.

The Spartan Race, mountain racing and Ultra Marathons are still on for the summer because of how spread apart the contestants are during the races.

Something, events in the fall, like the St. George Marathon, might have to consider.

I know a lot of places are doing staggered starts, 20 people go every five minutes, Steed said.

For the races rescheduled in the fall, Steed wonders how aid stations will look and how water will be provided.

Do you just need to carry all of the water you need, said Steed.

As for Johnson, he hopes people will still run without the competition.

Its something you can do on your own and safely do during this pandemic, said Johnson.

Mum lost five stone in a year and became super fit after the dramatic birth of her baby – Wales Online

A mum who had two surgical emergencies performed simultaneously lost five stone in a year after her ordeal inspired her to become super fit.

In agony, pregnant maths teacher Mari Wyn, 33, of Bangor, was rushed to hospital on January 6, 2018, with a ruptured appendix.

Then, after removing the damaged organ, hospital surgeons delivered baby Gwion five weeks premature, by caesarean section, feeling it was the safest option to protect the lives of both mother and child.

I was petrified on the way to the hospital and in a lot of pain, recalled Mari, whose husband, Gerallt, 33, is a construction technician.

I knew me, and my baby could be in serious danger.

Everything was such a blur. When I came to, I had no idea if I had a baby or not.

Thankfully, little Gwion had arrived safely, weighing 5lb 12oz, and soon after both mother and baby were allowed home.

Put through the mill, Mari needed three months to make a full recovery, which she mostly spent stuck on the sofa, unable to properly care for her newborn son, instead, relying on Gerallt to take look after them both.

But her recovery signalled the start of a new dawn for Mari who, in April 2018, then an unfit size 18, vowed to get into the best shape of her life, so she never missed out on a moment of her sons life again.

Mari explained: Not being able to take care of Gwion for those first few months after the operation was heartbreaking.

Ive always yo-yo dieted and never been one to exercise a lot. But those 12 weeks were a real wake up call. I was so weak I could barely bend down to pick up my son.

It made me realise that to be the best mum to Gwion when I recovered, I needed to be as fit and healthy as possible, so I never missed any moments with him again.

But losing weight meant changing the habits of a lifetime for Mari a serial yo-yo dieter, whose weight had crept up to almost 15 stone.

She said: Throughout my life Ive struggled with my weight and yo-yo dieting and Ive never been able to stick to a weight loss plan for long.

I suppose I never had enough motivation or willpower to.

At 5ft 3 and weighing 14 stone 12lbs, Mari had a body mass index (BMI) used to measure a healthy weight of 36.8, compared to the NHS recommended figure of between 18.5 and 25, meaning she was classed as obese.

But, at last, her baby had given her the motivation to slim down successfully.

Having little Gwion was all the motivation I needed to get myself as fit and healthy as possible, she said.

And, by April 2019, Mari had shrunk from 14 stone 12lb to 10 stone, reaching her goal weight.

But not content simply to maintain her slender size 10 frame, by April this year Mari had shed another half a stone and even ran her first half marathon in Cardiff in September.

This is the slimmest Ive ever been in my life, she said. I hit my goal weight a year ago and over the last year Ive lost another half a stone.

She added: Ive completely transformed my life. I never imagined Id be able to run a few miles let alone half a marathon. I feel incredible and also in the best shape to be the best mum.

Maris dramatic transformation has been thanks to following a WW eating plan and adding in exercise to her routine.

But, mostly, she credits a change in mindset for being able to maintain her weight loss one year on.

My mindset has changed forever Im never going back to the way I was, she said. I still enjoy food, and the odd treat, but now its all about balance and making healthy choices.

Mari had struggled with her weight throughout her adult life, even though she was at her heaviest in April 2018.

She recalled: When I wasnt trying to diet, I didnt have the healthiest eating habits. Before I started WW, breakfast was usually a bowl filled with sugary cereal Id eat as much as I could fit in it.

She continued: Lunch was usually some sort of meal deal where Id buy a sandwich, chocolate and a packet of crisps.

And dinner was something carby like pasta with lots of sauce and a slice of bread. And my portion sizes were too big because Id have the same sized dinner as my husband.

For pudding, I could polish off a whole bag of Maltesers or Minstrels in one sitting.

Stressful situations would also drive her to comfort eat.

If I had a stressful day at work, Id come home order a takeaway and wash it down with a bottle of wine and chocolates, she said. If I was stressed, Id snack too Id eat crisps and chocolate and never think to work out how many calories I was actually eating.

At the time, it made me feel better, but really it was just a short-term fix.

And, though she was delighted to be able to being Gwion home, she still struggled, given that she was recovering herself.

It was really tough, I was a new mum, but I could barely do anything for my son myself, she continued.

Because I wasnt able to do anything my husband took over all the cooking, and it was a lot of quick easy meals like toast, pasta or microwave meals. And because I couldnt move around much my weight started to creep up.

Her turning point came when she had Gwion and, three months into motherhood, joined her local WW class.

I wanted to get back into shape to be the best mum possible and as a kick start, I gave myself a month to lose one stone, she explained.

I joined WW and I followed the plan to a tee and within the first week Id lost 9lbs.

Swapping sugary cereal and snacks for three balanced meals a day, Mari says the weight soon fell off.

She explained: It was really easy to follow because all the meals were really tasty breakfast was usually eggs on toast, lunch was a chicken salad or chicken wrap and dinner was usually fish or meat with some healthy carbs and lots of veg.

Shedding one stone in one month, when Mari went on holiday to an all-inclusive hotel in Cyprus with her husband Gerallt and Gwion in May, she still stuck to the healthy eating plan.

She said: Usually, if I was going to an all-inclusive, Id happily eat everything I saw. Id have the attitude of, Ive already paid for this so Im going to eat it.

But by that point Id changed my mindset and I didnt think anything of reaching for the fruit and yogurt for breakfast.

For lunch Id have fruit and salads, and for dinner Id eat what I wanted, but I just make sure to have smaller portions.

And since losing weight, Mari has not looked back even adding exercise into her routine, something shed never done previously.

She said: I started jogging, which is something Id never done before in my life and I started walking two or three miles every day with the baby, so the weight just seemed to come off.

And in March 2019, just one month before she reached her goal weight, Mari ran her first ever 10km.

Exercise isnt just good for losing weight, its great for your mind too, she said. Jogging has kept me on track and helped me stay positive and motivated throughout my weight loss journey.

Then, in September, she ran the Cardiff Half Marathon.

I never believed Id ever be able to run half a marathon, she said. It was amazing experience running along to all the crowds and Gwion and Gerallt were there to cheer me on too.

Being an accomplished half a marathon runner has also helped when it comes to dashing around after her little boy.

Gwion wont sit still, hes constantly running around doing things, she said. If I hadnt lost the weight theres no way, Id be able to keep up with him.

Now Im fitter than Ive ever been, and I can be the best mum to my son. When I couldnt take care of Gwion for those few weeks it really made me think about looking after myself and my own health.

She continued: Even though Id tried to lose weight before I was never in the right mindset or didnt have enough motivation to do it. But having my son as motivation set me on the right path, because I wanted nothing more to be the best mum.

Now Im in the best shape of my life and all it took was a change of mindset, a healthy eating plan and some exercise. Im proof the WW plan really does work.

Ray Kaur a nutritionist at WW, said staying motivated can be a challenge as our brains can latch onto the idea that we are going to get an instant return for our hard work.

She explained: While its natural for our motivation levels to dip, which can mean defaulting to old habits or giving into temptations, its important to remember its not a permanent state.

Remembering your why the purpose that drives you and setting small, measurable steps will help you towards your overall goal.

Studies have shown the effect a few small changes can have on our overall wellbeing.

This could manifest itself in tweaks to our routines like experimenting with new recipes, trying an online exercise class to shake up work outs or even getting to bed a little earlier, meaning youll feel more refreshed the next day.
