What is the 80/20 rule diet? – Fit and Well

Posted: August 25, 2022 at 2:03 am

Wondering what is the 80/20 rule diet? If you've ever wanted to lose a little weight or even just improve your diet, you've probably tried plenty of fad diets. Of course, most fad diets end up being too restrictive or too prescriptive and the vast majority of people give them up within a month or two. But there is one diet that isn't quite so intensive. Unlike a lot of other trending diets, this diet is all about finding balance.

Well, this diet revolves around eating 80% "healthy" food and 20% "cheat" food. Unlike other diets, this diet doesn't require you to give up all junk food or to do without entire food groups. Instead, it's about being easy on yourself and finding a diet plan that you can sustain. You can even use it alongside the best protein powders for weight loss for extra benefits.

Ready to give it a try for yourself? Read on to find out: what is the 80/20 rule diet and how can you implement it in a safe, healthy way.

Edibel Quintero graduated as a medical doctor in 2013 from the University of Zulia and has been working in her profession since then. Her focus as a doctor lies in obesity and nutrition, physical rehabilitation, sports massage and post-operative rehabilitation. Edibels goal is to help people live healthier lives by educating them about food, exercise, mental wellness and other lifestyle choices that can improve their quality of life.

Dr Shyamala Vishnumohan is a private-practise dietitian/nutritionist and Mum with a passion for evidence-based pregnancy nutrition. She holds a PhD in Food and Nutrition from The University of New South Wales, Sydney and has spent more than 15 years in the area of Nutrition researching plant-based foods and isolated nutrients (Folic acid) and their bioavailability (how much body can absorb).

"The 80/20 rule states that you should get 80% of your daily calories from a healthy, nutritious diet and leave the remaining 20% for your favorite 'cheat meal' or dessert," explains Edibel Quintero (opens in new tab), registered dietician & medical content writer. "It is a very rational and easy-to-apply nutritional system that allows you to enjoy food that may be considered unhealthy without any guilt. In other words, it helps you have a healthier relationship with food, as you don't restrict yourself too much and allow yourself to eat whatever you want."

So, what exactly does that look like in the real world? "Lets do the calculations," says Dr Shyamala Vishnumohan (opens in new tab), PhD, qualified Nutrition Scientist and founder of One to One Thousand Nutrition Clinic. "Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a week equals 21 meals, so 80 percent would be roughly 17 healthy meals. That leaves you with 4 meals to indulge."

What's wonderful about the 80/20 rule is that it prioritizes filling your diet with healthy foods before you add less healthy foods into your diet. This way, you'll always get the nutrients you need first, before getting those tasty treats that we all crave from time to time.

If your goal is weight loss, the 80/20 rule may help you to lose weight safely and at a healthy pace.

"If you follow the 80/20 rule, you can definitely lose weight or keep it off if you don't exceed your daily caloric intake," Quintero says. "Otherwise, even if you were to eat 100% only healthy foods but in gigantic portions all the time, you will not avoid weight gain."

Vishnumohan also adds that this is a good diet to choose if you want to lose weight in a gentle way that doesn't involve guilt about what you're eating. "I love the fact that this diet is less restrictive and can help you to get rid of the 'guilt' when you treat yourself with a piece of cake," Vishnumohan says. "This is a good thing as feeling less guilty can actually encourage you to sustain the diet in the long run."

She adds, "Also when you prioritize nourishing foods, there is automatically less room for not so healthy foods." One 2014 study (opens in new tab), Vishnumohan notes, even shows how removing feelings of guilt around certain foods can support long term weight loss.

So, on a practical level, what should you eat if you are following the 80/20 rule diet and what "healthy" foods are suitable for the 80% part? Well, there aren't any strict guidelines.

"There are no set rules for what you eat for the 80 part," Vishnumohan says. "Start with whole foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, legumes."

If you ensure that 80% of your meals are filled with fresh, unprocessed foods that don't contain too much salt, fat or sugar, chances are, you'll be on the right track.

While the 80/20 rule diet offers balance, it isn't always as easy as it sounds. "In theory, the 80/20 diet sounds simplistic, however you must be organized and dedicate time for meal prep," Vishnumohan warns. "The 80/20 rule may not suit someone who needs to follow a heart healthy diet or manage blood sugar levels as you may need stricter control around saturated fat and processed sugars. Talk to a qualified dietitian to see whether this diet will suit you."

If this diet doesn't suit you or becomes too time consuming, there are other healthy ways to improve your diet without following any fad diets at all. "Instead of classifying food as healthy and unhealthy or good and bad, tune into your hunger and fullness cues and make small sustainable changes," she suggests.

Other ways to build a healthier diet without going on a strict diet include:

Like most diets, the 80/20 rule diet has both pros and cons. While it does offer balance and longevity and it isn't quite as restrictive as some fad diets, it can take up a lot of time and energy.

We recommend chatting with your doctor or nutritionist before trying any new diets to make sure your new plan is safe and healthy.

If you have time to read up some more on healthy eating we have the answers to; why does your weight fluctuate so much? And should you eat before bed?

Bella & Duke amongst the first to receive new RawSAFE food accreditation – Scottish Business News

Posted: August 25, 2022 at 2:03 am

LEADING pet food company Bella & Duke is amongst the first to receive new RawSAFE food accreditation that focuses on the best and safest possible food for our pets.

The new accreditation highlights the quality processes undertaken at Bella & Dukes factory in Inverkeithing, creating mealsdeveloped with nutritionists to ensure pets are happy and healthy.

Pet owners who choose a product with the RawSAFE label can be reassured that it has been manufactured to the highest safety standards.

Food safety has always been one of the primary concerns of the veterinary profession and raw meat industry. After years of poor regulations around pet food manufacturing, RawSAFE was born to create a set of robust standards for raw meat-based diets for pets, with the standards based on those in human food manufacturing.

Dr Brendan Clarke from RawSAFE Directors added: We know from our own clients in our practices that many pet owners who choose to feed a raw diet have difficulties talking to their veterinary teams about anything to do with food. Their vets need to have reliable sources of information to feel confident about their patients diet. Now that the RawSAFE accreditation is available to reassure veterinary professionals about the high standards of manufacturing and the Raw Feeding Veterinary Society is available to provide science-based assessment of species appropriate raw feeding, pet owners can direct their vets to these resources if they express concern.

Tony Ottley, Director of Bella & Duke, said: As the raw food market, and pet owners demand for the highest quality food continues to grow it is incredibly important that manufacturers like us are also challenged to produce to the highest standards. Were committed to our customers and assuring them they are choosing the best quality food available.

We wouldnt eat anything that wasnt produced in hygienic and safe conditions and our pets shouldnt be any different. At Bella & Duke, we have invested heavily in our factory, and with a number of processes in place our customers can be confident their dogs and cats will be safely fed. We want what is best for our pets, so would urge all companies to understand the requirements for this accreditation and meeting theappropriate standards.

Here are five top tips from Dr Brendan Clarke, Bella & Duke Chief Veterinary Adviser, on how to handle your pets raw food safely at home;

This Nest is Just Right: Fuzzy Gray Flaminglets Are the First Flamingos Hatched at the Birmingham Zoo – Over the Mountain Journal

Posted: August 25, 2022 at 2:03 am

Above, Baron named for the team eventually came about after the Barons donated the soil, called pitchers clay.

By Anne Ruisi

You could say the Birmingham Barons directed the stork to the Birmingham Zoos American flamingo exhibit earlier this summer when, for the first time, two baby flamingos were hatched.

Thats because soil from the pitchers mound at the Barons home stadium at Regions Field persuaded the future parents to build nests and hatch their babies, called flaminglets.

Its a big deal for us because its the first time theyve hatched. Not everyones flamingos will hatch, Hollie Colahan, the zoos deputy director, said. You have to have everything right for them.

Everything right means happy, healthy birds and the exact type of soil composition that will inspire flamingos to build nests.

The little birds, Pinecone and Baron named for the team eventually came about after the Barons donated the soil, called pitchers clay, when the pitchers mound was switched out with new soil, said Jennifer Ogilvie, the zoos marketing and public relations manager.

Pitchers clay is a combination of clay and sand. After the soil was taken in, the birds did the rest, including building the nest and making sure it was nice and wet so they could manipulate it to get it just right. The nests can be up to 2 feet tall but are worn down a bit since the chicks were hatched about seven weeks ago, said Kristen Eversole, a zoo birdkeeper who works with the flamingos.

While they are now on the same special diet as the adult flamingos, at first the parents dribbled crop milk into their mouths to feed them, Eversole said.

The parents are very involved, Eversole said. Pinecones parents took good care of him, but Barons parents rejected him at five days.

While zoo staff doesnt know why he was rejected, Baron had to be hand fed by zoo staff and is the more outgoing of the two. Hes a noisy little bird who chirps loudly and constantly around people because if he sees a human, he thinks hes going to get food, Eversole said.

Baron weighs about 4.4 pounds, and Pinecone is about 3.3 pounds, she said.

Seen from a distance on a recent sweltering afternoon, the 19 flamingos at the Birmingham Zoo stand so still in their classic one-legged stance that they almost appear to be yard decorations.

The cute little balls of gray fluff making their way on stick-like legs through the tall green grass of the exhibit trigger movement by the adults, who leisurely strut about their enclosure as the little birds rush to the fence to greet visitors.

While it takes about a year for a baby flamingos soft gray down to molt into the beautiful pink and coral feathers that make a flamingo so distinctive, the process is beginning on these little ones. Eversole extends one of Barons wings a bit and shows how hes starting to get his pink, coral and white flight feathers. The underside edge of the wing is black, just as it is in the adults.

Flamingos can fly, but the zoo trims the birds wings so they dont take off. If there is a strong wind and they hop the fence, the birds want to return to the enclosure because they are flock animals, Eversole said.

We gently bring them back if they need some help, she said.

During the day Pinecone and Baron roam the flamingo exhibit, which has an island where their nests were built and a large pond. At night the little ones are safely tucked into the flamingo building.

There are still (wild) hawks, raptor and mink that roam the area, Eversole said.

Groundbreaking Study Finds C15:0, an Emerging Essential Fatty Acid, is Key to Unlocking the Second-Ever Discovered Full-Acting Endogenous Cannabinoid…

Posted: August 25, 2022 at 2:03 am

SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) August 23, 2022

A recently published peer-reviewed study in Natures Scientific Reports revealed that an emerging essential fatty acid, called C15:0, is used by our bodies to make the second-ever discovered full-acting endocannabinoid.

Endocannabinoids have been touted as the holy grail to health due to their numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation, controlling pain, lowering anxiety, improving sleep, and supporting cognition and brain health.

The scientific world has been actively searching for molecules within our bodies that naturally regulate the endocannabinoid system, said Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson, the studys lead author and co-founder and CEO of Seraphina Therapeutics. The discovery of pentadecanoylcarnitine as the worlds second full-acting endocannabinoid opens an exciting new path to broadly and safely supporting both physical and mental health.

In this groundbreaking study funded by the Office of Naval Research, pentadecanoylcarnitine (PDC) was identified as a key molecule that is made within our bodies cells by combining C15:0 with carnitine. When tested for potential therapeutic activities, it was discovered that PDC fully activated CB1 and CB2 receptors that are present in the human endocannabinoid system.

An endocannabinoid is a molecule that is naturally intended to activate CB1 and CB2 receptors and is endogenous, which means it is made by our body. This is different from exogenous cannabinoids, like cannabis, which are put into our body and can artificially trick our CB1 or CB2 receptors.

Prior to this discovery, only one endocannabinoid, called 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), had been known to fully target both CB1 and CB2 receptors. 2-AG is made using an omega-6 fatty acid called arachidonic acid. As a key limitation, however, 2-AG is rapidly metabolized and has a very short half-life. While Venn-Watsons paper suggests that PDC is a more stable and longer lasting metabolite, more studies are needed.

In addition to showing that a diet higher in C15:0 results in raised PDC levels, the current study demonstrated that PDC has direct, broad, and dose-dependent beneficial effects on multiple human cell-systems mimicking various disease states. PDC effectively lowered ten pro-inflammatory cytokines in systems relevant to inflammatory, autoimmune, cardiovascular, neoplastic, pulmonary, and skin diseases.

Given our growing understanding of C15:0 as an essential fatty acid, it makes perfect sense that C15:0 is used to make active and beneficial metabolites in our bodies, said Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson. The understanding that we can increase our PDC levels by increasing our C15:0 intake provides a tangible path to better health.

Venn-Watsons team had previously discovered C15:0 as the first essential fatty acid to be found in 90 years, which was published during May 2020 in Natures Scientific Reports. Since then, over 30 peer-reviewed studies have been published from institutions around the world linking higher C15:0 to lower risks of multiple chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart failure, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. At least two studies have associated higher circulating C15:0 to longer lifespan, and a second team corroborated odd-chain saturated fatty acids, including C15:0, as essential fatty acids.

The surprising discovery of C15:0 as an essential fatty acid, which was made while Venn-Watson was studying how to continually improve the health and welfare of aging Navy dolphins, was recently featured as a TEDx San Diego talk and as a Fast Company World Changing Idea. The dolphins were the first to teach us that C15:0 is a healthy nutrient in an all-fish diet, more so than omega-3s, said Venn-Watson. We now have dolphins to thank for this latest discovery, which is gearing up to be a game-changer to help people lower anxiety, improve sleep, and manage pain.

18 Healthy Foods for Your Weight Loss Journey

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:12 am

Healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes. While weight loss is not a magic bullet for health, and not everyone needs to pursue weight loss, it might be something you want to work toward to feel your healthiest.

Coupled with regular movement, your diet can affect your health outcomes. (Just make sure to talk with a healthcare professional before making drastic changes!)

If losing weight is your goal, these 18 foods may help support a healthy weight loss journey, according to science.

Once feared for being high in cholesterol, whole eggs have been making a comeback.

These fears were rooted in misconceptions that overlooked how your body regulates cholesterol levels. Your body sources it, as needed, from your diet or your liver to maintain its baseline levels (1).

While people with elevated baseline levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol should be more conscious of how much cholesterol they get in their diet, moderate egg consumption between 712 eggs a week has been proven safe for many people (1, 2, 3, 4).

Although a higher intake of eggs may raise the levels of LDL cholesterol in some people, eggs are one of the best foods to eat if youre looking to reach or maintain a healthier weight.

Eggs are incredibly nutrient-dense. Interestingly, almost all its nutrients are found in the yolks like choline and vitamin D though egg whites deliver 46 grams of protein each (5).

Because theyre high in protein and fat, they help you feel full (6, 7).

Thats key, because responding to your bodys internal fullness and hunger cues can help you reach or maintain a healthy weight. In other words, getting in the habit of eating when youre hungry and stopping when youre full can help your weight loss goals (8, 9).

A study including 50 healthy people with more weight showed that eating eggs and buttered toast for breakfast instead of cereal, milk, and orange juice increased feelings of satiety (fullness) for the next 4 hours (10).

Similarly, another study among 48 healthy adults found that those who ate an egg-based breakfast, either high or moderate in both protein and fiber, reported higher satiety than those who ate low fiber cereal and milk (11).

Since feeling satiated can help combat overeating driven by feeling overly hungry, eating eggs may support your weight loss goals while also packing a ton of healthful nutrients into your day.

Leafy greens include kale, spinach, collard greens, Swiss chard, and a few others.

They have several properties that make them perfect for reaching or maintaining a healthy weight. For example, they pack fiber and nutrients that keep you satiated and hydrated.

Whats more, leafy greens contain thylakoids, plant compounds that have been linked with increased satiety and better appetite management in at least two human studies (12, 13, 14).

Its worth noting, however, that both studies are small, and participants took a 5-gram thylakoid supplement the amount found in about 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of raw spinach (13, 14).

Those receiving even a single dose of the supplement reported better appetite management, resulting in weight loss (13, 14).

However, more research in humans is needed to understand the effect of thylakoids from food sources as a tool for achieving a healthy weight as well as their long-term effects in supplement form.

In the meantime, leafy greens boast an assortment of fiber and micronutrients and are almost always a great addition to your diet (15, 16).

Adding leafy greens to your diet can help you feel satiated and reduce cravings for less nutritious foods. Learning to respond to your bodys internal cues of hunger and fullness can aid your larger healthy weight loss goals (8, 9).

If youre taking medications, such as blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin), speak with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian about how many leafy greens you should eat daily to find the right balance.

Leafy greens are high in vitamin K, which may interact with your medication. Consistent vitamin K intake is key (17).

Fatty fish like salmon are incredibly nutritious and very satisfying.

Salmon is loaded with high quality protein, healthy fats, and various important nutrients. That combination keeps you satiated and can help you reach a healthier weight (18).

Salmon is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce inflammation. Inflammation plays a major role in obesity and metabolic disease (19, 20, 21).

Whats more, fish and seafood, in general may also supply a significant amount of iodine.

The nutrient is necessary for proper thyroid function, which is important to keep your metabolism running optimally (22).

But studies show that a significant number of people dont fill their iodine needs. Adding fatty fish to your diet can help you consume enough iodine (22).

Mackerel, trout, sardines, herring, tuna, and other types of fatty fish are also excellent for your health.

Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts.

Like other vegetables, theyre high in fiber and tend to be incredibly filling.

Whats more, these types of veggies contain decent amounts of protein. Theyre not nearly as high in protein as animal foods or legumes, but still high for vegetables (23, 24, 25, 26).

A combination of protein, fiber, and low energy density (low calorie content) makes cruciferous vegetables the perfect foods to include in your meals if you want to lose weight (27).

Theyre also highly nutritious and contain compounds that may lower your risk of developing cancer. Keep in mind, though, that no amount of cruciferous vegetables can replace recommended cancer screenings or proper cancer treatment (28).

Meat remains a controversial food group for many people.

Beyond issues of sustainability and ethics, were still not sure whether and how red meat raises the risk of heart disease or diabetes.

Research on meat consumption and health outcomes has yielded low evidence of causation.

That language can be confusing, and its often misinterpreted as a ringing endorsement to eat more meat, but it simply means that there isnt enough evidence to say whether it causes unfavorable health outcomes (29, 30).

However, a high intake of red and processed meats is associated with a higher risk of cancer, diabetes, premature death, and heart disease (31).

Eating unprocessed meat in moderation (i.e., 23 servings a week) alongside fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may mitigate some of the cancer risks associated with meat consumption (30).

Nutritionally, chicken and red meat are both high in protein and iron.

Skinless chicken breast and lean red meat like tenderloin or flank steak pack protein and iron and have less saturated fat than other cuts. Opt for these most of the time to better support weight management and heart health.

Saturated fat has been thought to drive inflammation, which is associated with chronic illness. However, research on this, too, has so far yielded mixed results (32, 33).

How you prepare meat can also affect health outcomes.

Red meat that is cooked at high temperatures for a long duration, by smoking or grilling, for instance, renders fat drippings. Against hot cooking surfaces, these form a toxic by-product called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that may cause cancer (34).

Minimize this risk by limiting smoke, wiping away drippings, and eating lean meat in moderation. This means no more than a few 3-ounce (85-gram) servings per week. A serving is about the size of the palm of your hand (34).

White potatoes seem to have fallen out of favor possibly, at least in part, due to the rise of lower carb diets.

For what its worth, potatoes and other root vegetables have several properties that make them wonderful foods for weight loss and optimal health.

They contain an incredibly diverse range of nutrients a little bit of almost everything you need.

Theyre particularly high in potassium, a nutrient that most people dont get enough of. Potassium plays an important role in blood pressure management (35).

On a scale called the Satiety Index, which measures how filling different foods are, boiled white potatoes scored the highest of all the foods tested (36).

What this means is that by eating boiled white or sweet potatoes, youre more likely to naturally feel full. Youll also be providing your body with essential nutrients.

If you allow potatoes to cool for a while after boiling, they will form high amounts of resistant starch, a fiber-like substance that has been shown to have various health benefits, including weight loss (37).

Sweet potatoes, turnips, and other root vegetables are also excellent choices.

Tuna is another satiating high protein food.

Its a lean fish, meaning it has protein, which helps keep you full, as well as healthy fats. Among these healthy fats is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a form of omega-3 fatty acid, which may benefit your heart (22, 38, 39).

Eating fish like salmon and tuna can be a great way to increase your protein intake, with nutritious fish fats to support your eyes and brain (39, 40, 41).

If youre eating tuna canned, choose varieties canned in water if youre aiming to eat fewer calories. Tuna packed in oil ups the calories, fat, and sodium, but could be more filling. It depends on what your needs are that day (42).

Beans and other legumes can be beneficial for weight loss. These include lentils, black beans, kidney beans, and some others.

Those foods tend to be high in protein and fiber, which are two nutrients that promote satiety. They also tend to contain some resistant starch (43, 44, 45).

Due to their high fiber content, beans can cause gas and bloating in some people. Preparing them properly can help mitigate these side effects, though. Try buying your beans dry and soaking them for several hours before preparing.

Soup can be a delicious way to increase your intake of vegetables and whole grains you may not get enough of otherwise. However, soup varieties that are cream-based or that include processed meats arent going to provide the same nutritional boost.

Between the slurping, smelling, tasting, cooling, and chewing, soup takes some people longer to eat than other foods. Eating slowly may help you eat more mindfully. It could also help keep you from eating past fullness (46, 47, 48).

Feeling satisfied and nourishing your body while listening and responding to your bodys hunger and fullness cues are important in reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.

If you would like a richer soup, there are ways to increase its creaminess without the use of heavy cream, which can add less healthy saturated fat.

Try blending in avocado, which helps increase the fiber count of your soup, or cashews. You can also slice avocado on top as a garnish to the soup (49, 50).

Because soups are inherently liquids, and therefore hydrate you, they may promote fullness and support weight management. Incorporating a vegetable-based clear soup before your meal can be a way to feel more satisfied and to lose weight healthfully (51).

Dairy products tend to be high in protein.

One of the most protein-rich dairy products is cottage cheese, which is mostly protein.

Eating cottage cheese is a great way to boost your protein intake, which is important for building and maintaining muscle. Its also very satiating and high in calcium.

There may even be a relationship between calcium intake and healthy weight, but more research is needed in this area (52, 53).

Other high protein dairy products include Greek yogurt and skyr.

Avocados are unique fruits.

While most fruits are high in carbs, avocados are instead loaded with healthy fats. Theyre particularly high in monounsaturated oleic acid, the same type of fat found in olive oil.

Despite being mostly fat, avocados also contain a lot of water and fiber, making them greatly satiating.

Whats more, theyre a perfect addition to vegetable-based salads, as studies show that their fat content can increase how much of the carotenoid antioxidants your body absorbs from vegetables. In fact, it may increase absorption by 4.612.6 times (54).

In fact, they help absorb other important fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K). Avocados also contain many important nutrients, including fiber and potassium.

Its worth keeping in mind that avocados are energy-dense, so being mindful of portions is key when weight loss is your goal. The more you practice taking your bodys internal hunger and fullness cues, the more you can intuitively tell what the right amount is for you at that time (8, 9).

Nuts are high fat foods that also provide you with protein, fiber, and other plant compounds that benefit heart health (55, 56).

They make excellent snacks since they contain balanced amounts of protein, fiber, and healthy fats (57).

Studies have shown that eating nuts can improve metabolic health and even promote weight loss (58).

Whats more, population studies have shown that people who eat nuts tend to get more nutrients and be at a healthier weight than those who dont (59).

Like any high fat food, youll want to be mindful that youre eating only to the point of satiety. So, do mind your portion sizes if your goal is to lose weight.

Try eating a handful of unsalted nuts at first, and see how you feel after about 1520 minutes. If you still feel hungry, try half of another handful and give yourself some time to digest.

Recent studies show that a diet rich in whole grains can help support healthy weight loss (60).

Cereal grains can be wholesome parts of your diet and may benefit your metabolic health (61).

Thats because theyre loaded with fiber and contain a decent amount of protein. Notable examples include oats, brown rice, and quinoa.

Oats are loaded with beta-glucans, which are soluble fibers that may increase satiety and improve metabolic health (62, 63).

Both brown and white rice can contain significant amounts of resistant starch, particularly if cooked and then allowed to cool afterward.

While white rice is certainly OK, brown rice packs added nutrients especially fiber which may support your healthy weight loss journey.

Keep in mind that refined grains (i.e., white bread and most commercial baked goods) are OK, as long as you eat them in moderation and dont make them the foundation of your diet.

Also remember that sometimes, foods with whole grain on the label are ultra-processed, and they can contribute to unwanted weight gain when eaten in excess.

Eating chili peppers may be useful on a weight loss diet.

They contain capsaicin, a substance that makes hot peppers like chilis spicy.

Some studies show that capsaicin can improve how fast your body metabolizes fat and can increase your sensation of fullness. Together, these may support your healthy weight loss journey (64, 65).

The substance is even sold in supplement form and is a common ingredient in many commercial weight loss supplements. Thats because studies show that capsaicin supplements may increase metabolism.

A review study found that this effect only yielded an average of 33 calories more burned per day than those who did not supplement with capsaicin, though. More research is needed to learn about this effect, especially in regards to capsaicin from food sources (66, 67, 68).

Plus, there was no effect in people who were accustomed to eating spicy food, indicating that a certain level of tolerance can build up (69).

Most health experts agree that fruit is healthy.

Apple cider vinegar for weight loss – Mayo Clinic

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:12 am

Apple cider vinegar isn't likely to be effective for weight loss.

Proponents of apple cider vinegar claim that it has numerous health benefits and that drinking a small amount or taking a supplement before meals helps curb appetite and burn fat.

However, there's little scientific support for these claims. Studies of apple cider vinegar for weight loss have not consistently shown significant and sustainable weight loss across diverse groups of people.

Although occasional use of apple cider vinegar is safe for most people, it does carry some risks. For example:

Research Says This is the Best Way to Time Your Eating for Ultimate Weight Loss – Parade Magazine

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:12 am

When it comes to losing weight, many of us think about what to eat rather than when to eat. But does the timing of your meals matter? New research suggests that it does, in fact, make a difference.

In the study, researchers examined 90 people with obesity to see whether practicing time-restricted eating early in the day is more effective for weight loss, fat loss and cardiometabolic health compared to eating over a timeframe of 12 or more hours.

Results showed that early time-restricted eating was more effective for weight loss.

Keeping this in mind, should the timing of meals be included in your weight loss strategy? Heres what health experts have to say.

There are still many unanswered questions with this study.

Although I agree with the spirit of this experiment, which in my view is to explore whether people are better off not eating all day long from early morning to late at night, there are some problems with this study, says Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, a recognized leader in functional medicine and author of Vibrant: A Groundbreaking Program to Get Energized, Reverse Aging, and Glow.

The study compared eating within an eight-hour window, from seven a.m. to three p.m., on most days of the week, fasting after three p.m. However, they did not compare it to eating within an eight-hour window later in the day, such as from noon to 8 pm. Instead, they compared it to a group that did not practice time-restricted eating, and only fasted for 12 or fewer hours overnight.

The study talks about why eating earlier in the day may be more effective for weight loss, saying that the body burns more calories earlier in the day, but without comparing this to a time-restricted window later in the day, the study doesnt actually look at whether this early eating window makes any difference for weight loss. All it really tells us is that people lost more weight when they restricted their eating to an eight-hour period. Would it be just as effective if the eating window was later? This study doesnt answer that, Dr. Stephenson adds.

Do people tend to eat less when they eat for fewer hours during the day? The study isnt entirely clear on that point, either. Whats more, other studies, including a 2022 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that in the case of a lower-calorie diet, time-restricted eating caused no more weight loss or other benefits than the calorie reduction alone without the time restriction.

In addition, this study may also feed into the idea that time-restricted eating, strictly enforced, is necessary for weight loss. This doesnt work for everyone. In some people, time-restricted eating can lead to overeating and binge-eating episodes, Dr. Stephenson states. This is a case of research on both sides of the issue showing that time-restricted eating, or intermittent fasting as it is sometimes called, is likely beneficial to some people but not to others. Its also worth considering that this style of eating can be difficult if you are feeding a family, and can interfere with social activities for many people.

Dr. William Li, physician, scientist, president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation, and author of Eat To Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself explains that the study did not conclude there was an ideal time window only that the shorter your eating window, the more weight you would lose. In fact, both 12 hour and 8 hours of eating time during the day were beneficial.

What was interesting is that the shorter time window group began eating early, at 7 a.m., and stopped eating at 3 p.m. in the afternoon. This shorter period of eating means the body essentially begins fasting from mid-afternoon until early the next morning, for a total of 16 hours.

Lab studies of mice examined this same period (16 hours of fasting and eight hours of eating) and showed it could produce weight loss, Dr. Li states. The reason is that during fasting, insulin levels in the blood are lower. Insulin normally prevents lipolysis, the process of burning fat for energy, so when insulin levels are lower, there is more time to burn down fat. This was what led to the 16/8 intermittent fasting trend, and the study by Jamshed, et. al. supports this time window.

(scroll to keep reading)

Dr. Li says there are several points to note here:

Both 16 hours and the 12 hours of fasting produced clinically meaningful weight lossthey both workedalthough 16 hours led to almost 50% more weight loss.

The 16-hour group started eating very early in the morning and stopped mid-afternoon. It is not known if the same results would occur if you started late in the morning, say at 11 a.m., and ended in the early evening, like at 7 p.m.

In the study, there were dropouts in the shorter eating window group because they were unable to adhere to the diet. So, practicality factors into this kind of more restrictive eating pattern. If you cant stick to the plan, it wont work.

Both groups had nutrition coaching, were asked to have regular exercise, and had decreased their daily calorie intakethese are all factors that can affect weight loss success.

What actually works best is to follow your bodys own natural hunger cues.

To do this, first, you need to clean up your diet, Dr. Stephenson explains. Processed foods, with their tempting combinations of sugar, fat and salt, can confuse natural appetite cues, making us think we need more food than we actually require. If you switch to a mostly whole-food diet, what usually starts to happen is that you begin to appreciate actual hunger cues, and in many cases, that may mean you eat within an eight-hour (or 10-hour or six-hour) window naturally.

For example, sometimes I dont feel like having breakfast, or I dont feel like having dinner, or I have a big breakfast and dont need lunch, says Dr. Stephenson. If Im not hungry, I take that as a cue that I dont need more food, so I skip that meal. I personally dont think it matters which meal you skip. What matters is whether you really are hungry and need food, and what foods you choose.

The bottom line is that humans dont need to be eating all the time, but many people do so for reasons other than hunger, such as boredom, anxiety, food availability, or for pleasure. Sometimes thats fine, but if it happens consistently, chances are you will take in more energy than you need and that energy will get stored as fat. Its not as complicated as people sometimes think it is, Dr. Stephenson adds.

It's possible that a future study might compare time-restricted eating windows during different parts of the day, and that may provide more evidence that eating earlier is slightly more conducive to weight loss than eating later, but it would be necessary to see those results.

Eating, weight gain and weight loss are highly individual and subject to many external and internal factors, Dr. Stephenson explains. Eating intuitively according to your individual needs is a more reliable way to help your body reach and maintain a healthy weight for you.

The #1 Best Low-Carb Beer for Weight Loss, Says Dietitian Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:12 am

People drink all types of beer for plenty of reasonsfun, socialization, to cool offbut rarely, if ever, is it ever consumed for weight loss purposes. Alcohol, especially something as heavy and dense as beer, seems like it would be the opposite of what you should drink if you want to lose weight. Most alcoholic drinks are also very calorie-dense and contain sugar, two other reasons why they're not the best dietary options for anyone looking to lose weight.

"Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, which makes it almost as calorie-dense as pure fat," says Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD a registered dietitian at Balance One Supplements. "The most commonly consumed beers on the market are made with low-quality ingredients and brewing methods that do not consider the amount of carbohydrates, calories, or added sugars the product contains," Best says.

But Best says that's a different case when it comes to Bud Light NEXT, a carb-free and wheat-free beer that she touts as being the best low-carb beer for any avid beer lovers who are looking to lose weight, but don't want to stay away from their favorite beverage.

"Bud Light's new beer, Bud Light NEXT, may be one of the healthiest options for those that want to enjoy beer while also losing weight," Best says. "This beer is just 80 calories and zero carbs."

The reason that the beer is able to stay low on calories all boils down to a science; according to Best, the brand has perfected "their enzymatic activity in the brewing process." The enzymes, or proteins that cause chemical reactions, found in Bud Light NEXT have been able to break down the carbohydrates in the beer, a process that would normally take place in the body after drinking.

"With low-carb beer, only fat, protein, and alcohol are being counted towards the calorie content," Best says. "Most beer does not contain fat or protein, leaving just alcohol and minimal carbs to account for the calories it contains. Because of this, fewer excess calories are being stored as fat."

According to Best, the beer isn't just free of carbs, but there's also no wheat in it, which is rare among beers, although it helps Bud Light NEXT to remain carb-free.

"Very few beers are carb-free, but Bud Light achieved this while also being wheat-free," Best says. "Bud Light NEXT is made without wheat using just barley, hops, water, and rice."

As most beer is typically made with wheat, Bud Light NEXT is one of the few beer brands that's possible to drink for anyone with a wheat allergy, in addition to being the best low-carb beer for weight loss.

"While this isn't ideal for those with a gluten allergy or intolerance, it is great news for those with a wheat allergy," Best says.

Even though Bud Light NEXT is one of the rare beers made without wheat, it's still considered beer, as it's made with a grain like barley instead of wheat.

"Rather than using wheat, one of the highest carb ingredients, low-carb beer is commonly made with rice," Best says. "Beer is made with grains, though most are made with wheat. However, rice, barley, hops, and yeast are often used for a lower carb and at times gluten-free option."

Of course, you can't expect to lose any weight from simply sitting back and cracking open a Bud Light NEXT, it has to be accompanied with a healthy diet and regular exercise for any results to occur.

Scientific studies have shown that the ingredients in Prima Weight Loss improve muscle mass and decrease fat mass. By boosting fat metabolism and increasing insulin action, it prevents weight gain. Additionally, the supplement lowers the amount of fat that is stored in your body, aiding in the reduction of visceral abdominal fat that surrounds your important organs. Ingredients:

The ingredients added in Prima Weight Loss UK are:

L-arginine:

L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that is involved in a variety of cellular metabolic processes. L-arginine enhances performance while also promoting muscular growth. It can do this by providing energy and motivating a person to move around more and engage in greater physical exercise, both of which will help in fat loss. L-arginine is great support for sports units as a result, and it also increases training effectiveness. L-arginine, which is found in natural sources and is readily absorbed by the body, is an ingredient in Prima weight loss supplements. Together with the other nutrients, it helps to help healthy weight loss.

Garcinia Cambogia Extract:

The Malabar tamarind, often known as Garcinia Cambogia, is a tropical fruit. Hydroxycitric acid, often known as HCA, is the fruit's active component, and it appears to inhibit citrate lyase, an enzyme your body utilizes to produce fat. Additionally, it increases serotonin levels in the brain, which may decrease your appetite. One of the most effective active substances for weight loss is the concentrated hydroxycitric acid (HCA) in garcinia cambogia. It increases the activity of the previously stated enzymes, which curbs hunger and aids in the breakdown of extra fat that has been accumulated in fat deposits all over your body.

L-carnitine:

Another molecule that burns fat is called L-carnitine. It lessens the amount of fat your body stores and helps in getting rid of visceral abdominal fat, which surrounds your essential organs and causes disorders like fatty liver.

New Instagram feature allows users to remove weight loss and weight control ads from their feeds – CNBC

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:12 am

Instagram updated its Sensitive Content Control feature on June 6, and now users can filter out weight loss related ads on their news feeds.

The update widens the feature that Instagram introduced last summer by allowing users to filter content on more than just their Explore page.

"In addition to Explore, you will now be able to control the amount of sensitive content and accounts you see in Search, Reels, Accounts You Might Follow, Hashtag Pages and In-Feed Recommendations," the company wrote in its statement.

The "body weight control" topic is the latest to be included on the list of topics that can be filtered out of users' daily feeds. Other social media apps have made similar decisions in recent years. TikTok banned fasting app ads and restricted advertisements from promoting 'negative body image' in 2020.

It's unclear if Instagram was following TikTok's lead or made its changes as a result of a petition created by body neutral influencer, Katie Budenberg.

Last year, Budenberg created a petition to encourage Instagram to include an option for filtering weight loss ads in its Sensitive Content Control feature. In the petition's description, she wrote, "To some, these ads may be harmless and they can scroll on but for some these ads are triggering and dangerous."

The petition received over 30,000 supporters, and less than a year later, Instagram updated the feature. In a post on the app, Budenberg shared a graphic informing her followers of the change and listed steps for them to take to filter out weight loss content on their news feeds.

"I don't know if it was us, I don't know if Instagram just came to their senses, but most importantly - WE CAN NOW ASK TO NOT SEE WEIGHT LOSS ADS," she wrote in her caption.

If this is a change that you'd like reflected on your personal Instagram account, here are the steps you can take:
