Mum sheds 4st by following weight loss plan without ‘cutting anything out’ – Daily Star

Posted: April 26, 2020 at 3:45 pm

A stay-at-home mum has lifted the lid on her incredible weight loss journey in an exclusive chat with Daily Star Online.

Elizabeth Butler, 36, suffered from hypertension and recently had an operation for a congenital heart defect.

And before her inspiring transformation, the mum-of-two tipped the scales at 13st.

It all changed for Elizabeth, from Glasgow, when she decided she wanted to live a healthier life for her children and husband.

She turned to WW previously known as Weight Watchers to help her get into shape.

Now Elizabeth has spoken about the weight loss method which she "didn't need to cut anything out for".

She said: "[I started my journey because] I had quite serious hypertension as well as an operation for a congenital heart defect.

"I felt I needed to do this if I wanted to live a healthier life and be around for my children and husband."

Before she opted for WW, Elizabeth tried other diets and methods, but found nothing would work for her.

She added: "I tried loads of different diets, South Beach diet, intermittent fasting, also just cutting out carbs. I couldn't stick with them."

Then Elizabeth registered with WW at the end of August and had her first weigh in the following month.

Now she weighs a healthy 9st after dropping around 4st on the simple weight loss method.

She explained: "I haven't cut anything, bread, pasta, chocolate, cheese, all still having the food I love just being more mindful.

"Now I can run, I love it and also completed the couch 5k, also found that I'm not out of breath walking or running after my boys."

Unable to lose weight? 5 Morning habits that are causing weight gain – PINKVILLA

Posted: April 26, 2020 at 3:45 pm

Weight Loss Tips: Following these morning habits may help you to lose extra pounds. Read on to know more.

Weight loss is one of the most searched on Google as many people want to lose weight and lead a healthier life. Because of our current sedentary lifestyle, many are prone to obesity while many are already overweight. Losing weight will not only give you a leaner and better look cosmetically but will also keep obesity-linked health disorders at bay. Some of the diseases which are linked to obesity are heart issues, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, certain cancers and osteoarthritis among others.

Two best and natural ways to lose weight is diet and workout. A healthy and balanced diet and the daily workout will help you to reach the goal. However, there are certain factors that can lead to weight loss plateau or weight gain instead of weight loss. If you are reading this, I am assuming you are trying to lose weight aka fats. Are you trying hard but unable to lose weight? May be certain morning habits of yours are thwarting your efforts. Today we have compiled certain morning habits that may help you to shed extra pounds.

1. Waking up late / sleeping too muchDo you sleep for too long? Then sorry to be a harbinger of the message but oversleeping can affect weight loss plan and can lead to weight gain. As per the research of the University of Glasgow, sleeping too long can make you gain weight. Ideally, more than nine hours is oversleeping and if you are sleeping less than seven hours then you are undersleeping which is also harmful. The study's lead researcher Dr. Jason Gill had stated, "In people with high genetic risk for obesity, sleeping for too short or too long a time, napping during the day, and shift work appears to have a fairly substantial adverse influence on body weight."

2. Skipping breakfastHave you been skipping your breakfast? Then you should not do the same as it messes up your metabolism and can disrupt your body's internal clock as well, thus leading to weight gain. Skipping breakfast can also lead to lethargy which can further lead to the craving of junk food later in the day. It has been linked to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease among others. As per the study which was conducted by researchers from Tel Aviv University (TAU) and Hebrew University in Israel, breakfast consumption triggered the proper cyclic clock gene expression leading to improved glycaemic control. Daniela Jakubowicz of TAU said, "Proper meal timing - such as consuming breakfast before 9:30 am - could lead to an improvement of the entire metabolism of the body, facilitate weight loss, and delay complications associated with type 2 diabetes and other age-related disorders."

3. No MeditationDid you know the early meditation session can actually help to shed extra pounds? Yes, deep respiration and mindfulness meditation can help weight watchers as it can reduce stress hormone called Cortisol. If this hormone is out of balance, the same can lead to extended appetite and weight gain. So, instead of getting up in the morning and checking emails and social media handles which can instantly affect your mood, try to indulge in meditation in the morning.

4. No stretchingYou must have heard about stretching exercises we do during warm-up and cool-down sessions to reduce aches and injuries. However, stretching for a few minutes in the morning can help to lose love handles and extra fats. So, if you don't have time for intense cardio workouts, some stretching exercises for few minutes can be helpful. They will improve your metabolism, blood circulation, and even help in muscle building. Stretching and yoga poses can burn fat if practiced regularly. So, start your day with some stretching exercises. Some of the stretches that you can do are The Cobra pose, Seated Twist The Bridge, Side LungeInner Thigh StretchTricep Stretch, Side Bends, and The Bow among others.

5. Not drinking waterBefore you drink, your cuppa of caffeine, try to start your day with a few ounces of room temperature water. This will not only maintain balance in the body but also help you to avoid overeating throughout the day as it is an appetite suppressant. For the unversed, hydration plays a key role in weight loss by burning calories, aiding digestion, by removing toxins from our body and by helping in better workout among others. As per the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in the United States, adult women should include 2,700 mL/day while adult men should drink 3,700 mL/day. Again the requirement varies as per activity level, age, body size, humidity and health among others.

How Much Weight Can You Lose In A Month? What Experts Say

Posted: April 26, 2020 at 3:44 pm

Let's be real for a sec: Weight loss isnt always easy. Often times its trial and error to find what sort of diet and exercise plan works best for you. And even once you figure that out, you still might find that your bod just isnt responding to the changes you've made. Thats because the process of shedding weight can depend on several factors, including your metabolic rate, starting weight, sleep schedule, and more.

The most important part of weight lossaside from actually making your own decision to lose weight and doing it for yourselfis to do it in a healthy way (which also leads to a more sustainable weight loss). That means no crash dieting or exercise binging. But here's the million-dollar question: How much weight can you lose in a short amount of time (like a month) and still make sure you're doing it in a healthy way? (Because, yeah, nobody wants to be dieting forever.)

There's not one set number of pounds you might lose, says Christine Santori, RDN, program manager for Center for Weight Management in Northwell Healths Syosset Hospital in Syosset, New York.

The amount of weight one can lose in a monthand still be healthyreally depends on factors, like age, sex, starting weight, caloric intake, caloric deficit, and exercise," says Santori.

It takes 3,500 fewer calories per weekor 500 fewer calories a dayto drop one pound of weight.

These variables all play a role in how quickly you can drop pounds. And in terms of what's safe, Matthew Weiner, MD says it's not so much about the number of pounds lost, but the method used. "I think there are means that people will take to achieve weight loss which are unsafefor instance, consuming 600 or fewer calories a day is very unsafe," Dr. Weiner says.

Not only is a too-low-cal approach unsafe, but people who lose weight gradually and steadily (about one to two pounds per week) are more successful at keeping it off, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That adds up to about four to eight pounds a month. The story's a little different for those looking to lose 100 pounds or morein that case, you can shed up to 20 pounds in one month, though "some of that is just water," notes Santori.

You're going to have to look at your daily calorie intake. In general, you should aim to cut 500 calories out of your daily meal plan to lose a pound each week, says Irene Franowicz, a registered dietitian at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

"It takes 3,500 calories less per weekor 500 less calories a dayto drop one pound of weight in a week," she says. Following that math, to drop two pounds in a week youd have to cut 1,000 calories a day. Thats a big change, Franowicz says, and it may not be the best approach for you. But there are some ways to cut out those calories.

Yeah, yeah they sound a little eye-rolly and minimal (and you've probably heard of some of these little tricks before!)but little tweaks like these can add up.

Calories burned while exercising can make a difference too, says Franowicz. Remember, calories give your body the energy it needs to function, but they can also be stored as fat when you consume them in excess. To keep that from happening you have to a) reduce your calorie intake or b) increase your physical activity. But if you want to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time (which you do), you're going to want to do both.

"A great way to achieve the 500-calorie deficit is to divide it in half, maybe cut out 250 calories a day from food and burn an extra 250 more a day through movement to equal 500 calories," she says. That way, says Franowicz, you won't feel deprived because you're making too drastic of a change to your diet that won't be sustainable in the long runbecause the goal isn't just losing weight, but keeping it off.

Something important to remember when it comes to calorie counting and calories burned, however: It varies between people. "The number of calories one needs to maintain weight or promote weight loss is based on height, age, and weight, and is individual to the person," says Santori. That means you may have to experiment to find what works for your body.

Well, it depends on the kind of procedure you had, Dr. Weiner says. With a gastric bypass, most of his patients will lose 10 percent of their total body weight within six weeks after the surgery. With a sleeve gastrectomy, Dr. Weiner says the process takes a little longer, with most patients seeing their 10 percent drop within eight to 10 weeks post-operation.

So what's the difference between the two surgeries? A gastric bypass anatomically changes the shape of your stomach and involves changes to your intestines. A sleeve gastrectomy removes about two-thirds of your stomach, but preserves the natural flow of intestines.

"A gastric bypass results in more powerful hormonal changes than a sleeve," Dr. Weiner says. And the primary determinant that drives weight loss in this case is hormonal. But even after surgery there are uncontrollable variables that will determine a patient's ability to lose weight. Its really genetics that are driving the difference as opposed to lifestyle changes, Dr. Weiner says.

Ultimately over time though, most of Dr. Weiner's patients lose significant weight within the first year of their surgery.

If you have been modifying your diet and exercise, most experts suggest sticking to one to two pounds a week, or four to eight pounds total, unless you have more than 100 pounds to lose, in which case, losing up to 20 in a month is okay. But you don't have to strive for that 20-pound mark (and if you're going over that, talk with your doc). According to Santori, even modest weight loss can produce beneficial results. Weight loss of 5 to 10 percent of total body weight is associated with improvements in blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and blood sugars.

It's also important to watch your calorie count. Franowicz doesn't recommend dipping below 1,200 calories a daythe lowest calorie threshold she recommends. "Very low-calorie diets can result in fatigue and physical activity is such an important part of [weight loss]. If people are too tired to exercise, then this is a sign you are too low in calories," she says.

Another important thing to remember: The number on the scale shouldn't be your main focus. If you're also adding some exercise (through cardio and strength training) to your workouts, you might also see smaller overall weight lossabout half a pound a weekbut how your body looks and feels is a better measure of progress, says Santori. "As we already know, muscle weighs more than fat," she says, adding that you may see inches come off or clothes fit more comfortably as opposed to a major dip on the scale.

The bottom line: For healthy, sustainable weight loss, aim to lose one to two pounds per week, or four to eight pounds per month.

From the Big Ten to Washburn: A breakdown of the final eight Vikings selections – PostBulletin.com

Posted: April 26, 2020 at 3:43 pm

The Vikings set a record for the most picks (15) in the seven-round draft era. Heres a breakdown of all eight of their picks from the final three rounds.

Round 5, Pick 169:Temple CB Harrison Hand

What It Means: Hand is the third cornerback taken in the draft, and he has the ability to shift to nickel and also potentially play safety. After losing three cornerbacks this offseason, the Vikings have replaced them with the additions of Cameron Dantzler, Jeff Gladney and now Hand. He led Temple with three interceptions in 2019. He also had eight pass deflections. Hand will have his work cut out for him to earn a starting job, but hes got a chance to be a special teamer on Day One.

Very good athletic ability, General Manager Rick Spielman said. We need to continue to build depth in the secondary. Hell come in and compete. Also, I know what he can do and contribute on special teams.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A one-year starter at Temple, Hand was the boundary cornerback in defensive coordinator Jeff Knowles scheme, playing both man and zone coverages. He was part of Rhules first recruiting class, but called Waco a big culture shock and made a smooth transition to Temple in 2019, leading the team in interceptions. Hand is a competitive player with the eyes and toughness required to read and react, trusting his vision and not allowing himself to overthink things. While he isnt a poor athlete, he doesnt play with sudden qualities and lacks the textbook technique to help compensate. Overall, Hand is quick to sort from off coverage, but lacks the necessary twitch in his hips and feet to be a consistent playmaker at the position, projecting as a possible backup zone corner.

Round 5, Pick 176:Miami WR K.J. Osborn

What It Means: There were higher-rated wide receivers on the board, but Osborn gives the Vikings a potential big-time punt and kick returner. Osborn averaged 15.9 yards per punt return last year. He also had 50 catches for 547 yards and five touchdowns for Miami, who dealt with a lot of quarterback issues. Osborn transferred from Buffalo after putting up big numbers in 2018. He had 353 catches for 892 yards and seven touchdowns. Osborn seems like a little bit of a stretch in the fifth round.

"We think he has a legitimate chance of winning the punt return and the kickoff returns jobs with his explosive speed and power, Spielman said.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A two-star recruit out of high school, K.J. Osborn started his prep career at Lincoln High in Ypsilanti before transferring to IMG Academy for his senior season, finishing with 21 catches for 379 yards and seven scores. He received a scholarship to Buffalo and became the teams second-leading receiver behind Anthony Johnson. With his degree in hand, he transferred to Miami for his final season and led the Hurricanes in receiving, averaging 15.9 yards per punt return. Known as a hard-working leader, Osborn quickly established that in Coral Gables, earning captain status shortly after he arrived. He runs well with a low center of gravity, but yards after the catch or broken tackles were scarce on tape. His hands and route running are best described as average. Overall, Osborn doesnt explode out of his breaks to separate upon command, but he is instinctive and dependable with the make-it attitude that will help him compete for a reserve/special teams role.

Round 6, Pick 203:Oregon State LT Blake Brandel

What It Means: Brandel started 48 games in a row for Oregon State and was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2019. Brandel received a 93.1 pass blocking grade by Pro Football Focus, the best mark in the nation. Graded out at 90 overall, the sixth-best mark nationally. He graded out at 82.5 on run blocking. He allowed just one sack and four overall hurries. Hes one of the better pass blockers in the class.

"I'm eternally grateful, Brandel said. I'm just excited to be a Viking.''

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A three-star recruit out of high school, Blake Brandel (Bran-dull) was a two-time all-state left tackle at Central Catholic, leading the team to back-to-back 6A state titles. The No. 3 ranked recruit in the state (one spot ahead of Washingtons Jared Hilbers), he signed with Oregon State and started every game the last four seasons. He was an iron man at OSU who played through pain and rarely came off the field, playing 97.7% of the Beavers offensive snaps since 2016. Brandel is a technically-sound blocker who works hard to bend, stay square and slow down rushers with his reach. However, he lacks ideal arm length for edge work and moving targets will give him trouble. He committed only two penalties the last two seasons and walks the fine line of playing smart while also looking to finish each rep. Overall, Brandel has athletic limitations, but he moves with composed feet and patient hands to strike-and-anchor, projecting as a possible NFL swing back-up.

Round 6, Pick 205:Michigan S Josh Mettellus

What It Means: Andrew Sendejo and Jayron Kearse are gone, so Minnesota decided to tab Josh Mettellus to give them some much-needed depth at safety. While hes not a speedster, Mettellus is a big hitter and really smart. The fact that Minnesota only used one pick so far on a safety seems to be a good sign for Anthony Harris future with the franchise.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A three-year starter at Michigan, Metellus played strong safety in defensive coordinator Don Browns man-heavy scheme. Although he didnt make as many plays in coverage as a senior, he made noticeable improvements as a run defender in 2019, offering positional versatility at the next level. Metellus competes with an aggressive mentality, especially patrolling the alleys or closing on outside routes. His urgent play style is part of his identity, but he will have a tough time recovering after a false step vs. NFL speed. Overall, Metellus might not have the high-end athletic traits that will earn him a starting role in camp, but if he gets into an NFL game, he might not give the job back, showing the toughness required for downhill work and just enough range on the back end.

Round 7, Pick 225:Michigan State DE Kenny Willekes

What It Means: Kenny Willekes went from a walk-on to one of the best pass-rushers in the Big Ten. Willekes was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in both 2018 and 2019 and the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2018. He was also a first-team All-American in 2018. Hefinished his Spartan career ranked No. 1 in school history with 51 tackles for loss. To get a hard-working player like Willekes in the seventh round is tremendous value.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A three-year starter at Michigan State, Willekes played primarily as the field defensive end in head coach Mark Dantonios 4-3 base scheme. Lightly recruited out of a small high school, he walked on and turned himself into one of the most accomplished players in Spartans history, passing Julian Peterson for the school-record in career tackles for loss (also ranks third all-time in sacks). Competing with a touch of insanity, Willekes attack blocks with natural body lean and [139] powerful hands to create movement and open pass rush lanes. Although he is the type of player you shouldnt bet against, his average-at-best athletic traits create concern for his role and transition at the next level. Overall, Willekes lacks the anchor and length to be a consistent edge-setter vs. NFL offensive tackles, but his resilient mentality and competitive motor translate to production, which should land him in a defensive line rotation.

Round 7, Pick 244:Iowa QB Nate Stanley

What It Means: The Vikings have competition for the backup quarterback job. Stanley was a three-year starter for the Iowa Hawkeyes. His big arm and steadiness was a big reason why the Hawkeyes went 27-12 with him under center. His name is littered across Iowa record books. Stanley isnt mobile but hes used to a pro-style offense that loves to feature the rushing attack. The Vikings took a stab at drafting Stanley so they didnt have to compete with other teams in undrafted free agency.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A three-year starter at Iowa, Stanley took snaps under center and shotgun in offensive coordinator Brian Ferentzs I-formation offense, integrating power and zone principles. Only the second three-year captain in school history, he finished his career with 39 straight starts, posting a 27-12 record. Stanley has the arm talent to make power throws that cut through the wind, although his fastball is better than his change-up. He is most effective on three- and five-step drops, but when the offense (routes, reads, pass protection) isnt in rhythm, his effectiveness drops, and he rarely creates second chances for himself under pressure. Overall, Stanley looks the part with above-average arm strength and the resilient attitude desired at the position, but his spotty ball placement and struggles to make plays outside of structure will make it tough for him to surpass NFL backup status.

Round 7, Pick 249:Mississippi State S Brian Cole

What It Means: Cole was all set to sign with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent when the Vikings drafted him late in the seventh round. The Vikings are taking a flyer on a former 4-star prospect who was super athletic coming out of high school. He originally went to Michigan before transferring to East Mississippi Community College before ending up at Mississippi State. His length and speed really stood out to the Vikings, and hell look to latch on to a special teams role.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A two-year starter at Mississippi State, Cole played the STAR position in former defensive coordinator Bob Shoops 4-2-5 scheme. Originally reluctant moving to defense, he played a hybrid linebacker-nickel position for the Bulldogs, which gave him the freedom to blitz, cover and stop the run. An offensive-minded player, Cole shows the willingness to play physical football with the speed and toughness that fits at safety. However, even though he should get better with more experience, anticipating and diagnosing plays on defense doesnt appear to come natural to him. Overall, Cole is a traits-based prospect with his size, length and athleticism, but his lack of instincts and coverage talent creates substantial doubt about his NFL future, projecting as a defensive project who needs to stand out on special teams to earn a roster spot.

Round 7, Pick 253:Washburn OL Kyle Hinton

What It Means: Its not often that an All-American will be sitting there in the seventh round. Hinton is a little undersized but hes smart and quick. Hell add depth to the middle of a Vikings offensive line that could use help on the interior. Hinton figures to take some reps at center.

The Athletics draft guru Dane Bruglers breakdown: A three-year starter at Washburn, Hinton lined up at left tackle in head coach Craig Schurigs pro style offense, lining up in two- and three-point stances. An All-American in two sports in college, he left his mark at Washburn and his coaches are very complimentary of his football character and work ethic. Hinton is extremely quick off the ball and stays balance din his slide-and-redirect, rarely ending up on the ground. He was able to latch-and-drive Division-II defenders, but it will be a different story vs. NFL power as his core strength is a concern. Overall, Hinton faces a position switch and a sizeable jump in competition at the next level, but his athletic traits and intelligence are exciting foundation traits for a team willing to be patient, projecting as a low risk, high reward guard/center.

How Space Travel Tries to Kill You and Make You Ugly – WIRED

Posted: April 26, 2020 at 3:43 pm

Of these 34 risks, three are potential showstoppers: radiation, gravity (or lack thereof), and the need for surgery or a complicated medical procedure.

The Gravity of the Situation

Lets explore the gravity issue.

Some science fiction writers in the mid-20th century speculated that zero gravity would be life-giving: blood would flow more easily; arthritis would be a thing of the past; back pain would be cured for good; and aging itself would slow down. So, bring grandma along for the ride. We had hints from early in the space program that such a rosy scenario wasnt true. Astronauts returned from just a few days of weightlessness feeling weak. But they recovered; and many thought, well, maybe it isnt so bad. Then we spent more time in space. Russians on the Mir space station for months appeared to have some serious, prolonged health issues on their return. The Russians were tight-lipped about the health of their cosmonauts, though, so we never knew for sure. Many of these cosmonauts, championed as heroes, were rarely seen in public after their return. It was the ISS missions that drove home the message: long-term exposure to zero gravity is detrimental to human health on many levels. Kudos to NASA for that.

Before I continue, I should first define some terms. Zero gravity, however visually convenient, can be a misnomer in the context of near-earth activity. The astronauts on the ISS are not living in the absence of gravity. Rather, they are in free-fall, forever falling over the horizon and missing the Earth. The ISS and other satellites are not floating in space because they have escaped the pull of Earths gravity; they stay up there because of their terrific horizontal speed. The ISS is moving at 17,500 miles per hour. If, somehow, it came to a complete stop, it would fall straight down to Earth, and down would come astronaut, cradle and all. The Earths gravitational force, in fact, keeps the moving satellites in orbit as a perfectly balanced counterforce, in a downward motion, to the lateral motion set in place during the launch. Without the Earths gravitational force (if the Earth suddenly, magically, disappeared), the satellites would shoot off in a straight line. Therefore, more accurate terms for describing the lack of sensation of gravity aboard the ISS are microgravity and weightlessness. Yet, even these terms are neither perfect nor synonymous. Astronauts on the ISS have weight, about 90 percent of their weight on Earth, which is only about 200 miles below their feet. Theyd be much lighter on the Moon, actually, at just about 16 percent of their weight. Absolute zero gravity is not attainable, because gravity is the force of attraction between any two objects. But in deep space, far from the gravitational tug of any moon, planet, or star, gravity is attenuated to almost zero. I tend to use the terms zero gravity, micro-gravity, and weightlessness interchangeably in the context of space travel.

Our understanding of gravitys effect on the body has only two data points: one and zero. On Earth, we live with a gravitational force of 1G. On the ISS, astronauts live in 0G. We really dont know about anything in between. Air force pilots might accelerate their jets so quickly that they experience forces of 5G or higher, which sometimes causes them to black out. Thats five times the force of normal Earth gravity, which pushes blood out of their brains. But such forces typically last only a few seconds; the pilots arent living in a hyper-gravity environment. And anyway, we dont care too much about forces greater than 1G because every place we want to go in our Solar SystemL2 orbit, the Moon, Mars, and so onhas a gravitational force less than 1G.

Ramadan 2020: when is the best time to exercise when fasting? – The National

Posted: April 26, 2020 at 3:42 pm

It can be hard to maintain a normal workout routine during Ramadan, due to interrupted sleeping patterns and a lack of liquids.

However, in order to remain healthy during the holy month, finding the time to work out will help to keep energy levels up, your mind clear and your metabolism stable.

The holy month should not be when you give up on your fitness goals. Rather, make Ramadan a time to recharge so you can hit the gym strong after these four weeks, says Ahmed Al Sayed, a personal trainer at Fitness First.

As someone who observes the fast himself, Al Sayed focuses on three basic fitness aspects in each work-out: strength training, cardio and flexibility. The reason I prioritise muscular strength is because a loss of muscle mass will slow down your metabolism. The goal ought to be to avoid both: losing muscle and a drop in your metabolic rate, he says.

When it comes to cardio, I recommend a light-intensity session, limited to 30 minutes of slow, steady distance, every other day. Remember, you will be dehydrated so your body will use your fat storage as a source of energy, especially if you do your cardio before iftar. However, the fact that youre depleted means your blood pressure might drop at onset or even after, so dont skip warm-up and cool-down routines.

Similarly, when you start your resistance training, choose exercises that target the upper body before the lower body to avoid any drop in your blood pressure during or after. The last fitness aspect to focus on is flexibility to avoid any mobility-related issues you might face, especially when you exercise normally again after Ramadan and during the Eid break.

During the fast, with high temperatures and no liquids from sunrise to sunset, you will compromise your health by pushing yourself too much. It is not recommended to do intensive cardio workouts and heavy weight-training exercises while fasting. You should also cut your routine down to two cardio sessions a week throughout the holy month.

Here are the four best options for working out during Ramadan, according to Fitness First:

90 minutes before sunset

A light work-out towards the cooler part of the day will mean you can soon replenish yourself with water, and you will reap the benefits of exercising on an empty stomach. However, any workout done at this time should be low-key with more resistance training, low repetitions and weights, and lots of stretching. This is also a good time for a short brisk walk or light jog.

After your evening meal

While cardio can be difficult on a full stomach, around one hour after iftar is a good time for weight training. On the days you plan to exercise after your meal, you may want to add in a little extra food to fuel your body, and ensure you drink plenty of water to rehydrate.

Between 11pm and 2am

For night owls, the best time to work out may be between 11pm and 2pm, after your food has had a little time to settle and your body has fully rehydrated. If you have managed to get some rest in the afternoon, exercising at this time can be favourable, as it is cooler than the day time, and will still leave you with a couple of hours more sleep until you get up to start the day.

Between 3am and 4am

For early risers, the best time to work out may be just before your morning suhoor. This way, you will have energy from the previous nights meal, yet still have an empty stomach. You can hydrate while you exercise and once you are done you can eat again to refuel. This method will also get you get energised for the day ahead.
