Proffee (Protein & Coffee): The New Health Trend Brewing on TikTok – Healthline

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:04 am

Theres a new trend brewing on TikTok. Its called proffee and the hashtag #proffee has already received nearly 10 million views on the social media platform.

In the TikTok world, where proffee has taken off, this usually means a protein shake poured over a cold brew or iced coffee, but in actuality, it can be any type of coffee with protein added, says Carolyn Cohen, an integrative nutritionist, functional medicine health coach, and host of the podcast Wellness While Walking.

The dramatic slow-motion videos, which end with a creamy beverage in a glass jar, make it look fun and delicious. And some TikTok users are swearing by its benefits, including weight loss. But do the health claims really shake out?

Experts spilled on what you need to know before trying this made-for-social-media beverage.

Some of the most popular purported benefits of proffee swirling around include:

But experts offer mixed reviews on these claims.

Noah Quezada, RDN, says that proffee can be energizing and improve focus and performance because of the caffeine content.

A small 2017 study of seven males who underwent a cycling-based exercise test suggested that caffeine increased time to exhaustion by 12 percent. Another study from 2016 of 12 males indicated that moderate caffeine consumption before and during a round of golf improved subjective energy levels and performance while lowering fatigue.

That said, its important to note that these studies were not done on proffee itself.

Dan Gallagher, a registered dietitian with Aegle Nutrition, says there are better ways to get a jolt.

Healthier sources of caffeine would be black or green tea or simply a cup of coffee, Gallagher says.

A 2019 study suggested that protein intake could boost metabolic health and longevity.

Patricia Kolesa, MS, RDN of Hackensack Meridian Health notes that the recommended dietary intake is 0.8g/kg of body weight per day. In other words, a 150-pound person would need about 120 grams of protein per day. For context, one piece of chicken weighing 174 grams (6.13 oz.) contains about 55 grams of protein.

Kolesa says the protein in shakes can contribute to this protein intake but notes that most people can get enough protein from food. And Gallagher says food is a better protein source.

Protein is healthiest when its sourced from whole ingredients like seafood, lean beef, beans, eggs, or milk, Gallagher says. Maintaining a balanced diet will give all the advertised benefits and more.

Part of the issue is that protein shakes can have added sugars or low quality, processed proteins that dont measure up to the natural proteins found in foods.

Any health benefits of adding protein to coffee can be quickly undone by the window-dressing the devil is in the details when it comes to proffee, Cohen says.

Weight loss is one of the most commonly discussed benefits of proffee. Quezada encourages people to proceed with caution.

Proffee is not a miracle weight-loss drink, Quezada says.

That said, Quezada notes that some evidence suggests that caffeine and protein can aid some people in weight management.

For example, a 2019 meta-analysis of 12 studies indicated that drinking coffee reduced body fat, especially in male participants. A 2020 study suggested it could lower body fat in women.

Another 2020 study indicated that adhering to a high protein diet could be an effective way to lose weight and prevent obesity.

But Kolesa stresses that there are no studies on proffee itself.

It is not a guarantee that the protein coffee itself will help someone lose weight, she says.

And she adds pouring in high fat milk, creamers and sugary syrups can negate any benefits from the beverages protein and caffeine.

Ultimately, Quezada stresses that meeting weekly exercise requirements and following a nutritious diet of lean animal and plant-based protein, produce, and complex carbohydrates are more proven ways for individuals to get the benefits of proffee.

Kolesa says going this route can help people avoid some cons of drinking proffee, including:

The exact number of cups of coffee a person can handle isnt an exact science it will vary based on the individual. If you notice you are jittery or having trouble sleeping, consider reducing the amount.

But Kolesa says the FDA reports that most healthy adults can consume 400 mg. of caffeine daily or four to five cups of coffee. However, she says pregnant and lactating people should consume less.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests individuals limit caffeine intake to 200 mg., or one 12-oz. cup of coffee, per day during pregnancy.

The CDC notes that a small amount of caffeine passes through breastmilk but says adverse effects, such as poor sleep and irritability, are not typically seen if the lactating person consumes 300 mg. of caffeine, or two to three cups of coffee, daily.

The syrups and high fat milk and creamers some TikTokers are putting in their beverages may not be best for people with diabetes, high cholesterol, or heart conditions.

You could try using low sugar syrups or protein shakes/powders, Kolesa suggests. You can also try low fat creamers and milk.

An older 2013 study suggested that consuming caffeine six hours before bedtime could disrupt sleep.

Kolesa also suggests reading the labels of protein shakes to ensure you are not allergic to any ingredients. Other ingredients may not trigger allergic reactions but could lead to GI issues, like stomach aches. If you notice youre having those issues, stop using the shake.

Gallagher says proffee isnt off the table, but it shouldnt be considered a meal replacement or your primary source of protein or caffeine.

If youre looking for something tasty, this is probably worth drinking, but I would look at it essentially as a blended drink from Starbucks, Gallagher says. Its probably not something to have daily.

And he stresses its essential to rely on advice from healthcare providers and peer-reviewed studies, not TikTokers, for dietary advice.

I would approach nutrition and wellness trends on TikTok with a healthy dose of skepticism, Gallagher says. Research, but be wary of what sites are advertising benefits. Its good to question what biases sites might have, and when in doubt, research scientific studies or medical organizations specifically.

Rent increases 2022: Why it is so expensive to rent – Axios

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:04 am

Data: Census Bureau; Chart: Jacque Schrag/Axios

Until recently, soaring rent prices were mainly a Big City problem. Now, rents are an everywhere problem.

Why it matters: Skyrocketing rents, coming at the same time housing prices are at historic highs, make it hard for people to afford to live. At the lower end of the income spectrum, higher rents put more people at risk for homelessness.

By the numbers: Asking rents in the second quarter were 23% higher nationwide compared to the same period in 2019, according to Census data released earlier this month.

Zoom out: On a macro level, soaring rents contribute to inflation causing the Fed to raise rates and put the brakes on the economy. That puts the country closer to the possibility of a recession.

The terrible catch: A recession wouldn't bring much relief for renters. When the economy slows down, rents don't fall (take a look at that chart) but people do lose their jobs.

What's happening: Landlords are passing on their rising costs to renters.

Rent growth has slowed down a bit this summer, as the economy slowed, but prices are still climbing in strong job markets, Redfin reported recently.

Our friends at Axios Today asked listeners, especially those outside the big coastal cities, to text their experiences with this growing rent crisis.

Go deeper: Listen to the Axios Today episode

Chaffee DHS Executive Director Henson has Died – by Jan Wondra – The Ark Valley Voice

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:04 am

Chaffee Department of Human Services (DHS) Executive Director Dave Henson has died. The Chaffee County Staff was informed of Hensons unexpected death Monday afternoon, Aug. 15, and Chaffee Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) Chair Greg Felt announced during the Aug. 16 BoCC meeting. No further details are available at this time.

This is a shock, said Felt, urging staff and the public to think of Hensons wife Robin, and two children. I want to convey to his children what a special and effective person he was, and make sure they understand the energy and commitment he put into the job. If youve ever sat in on one of our board social services meetings, youd have to concur that there are a lot of people in Chaffee County that Dave touched with his work.

That covers it, said Commissioner Rusty Granzell. I put my whole trust in Dave, Everything he did was for Chaffee County.

In the interim, Chaffee Director of General Administration Bob Christensen will assume the leadership of the countys DHS operations, leading the countys dedicated human services staff in a role that was his original county position.

I worked on human services here and at CCI, and Dave and I worked together a lot on the legislative agenda. Its hard to understand unless you worked with him he really did care what the legislation did for Chaffee County and for the whole state, said Commissioner Keith Baker. He looked downstream, to see the long-term impact. Hed been in human services a long time, and he was realistic but not jaded in so doing he had a deep caring for his people in the Department of Human Services.

The programs under Hensons oversight were major, including the countys fostercare program, SNAP food assistance, the WIC nutrition program, the National Child Abuse Prevention month, and the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans, including elderly people, to name only a few.

During the pandemic, he worked with the Chaffee Office of Housing to get funds to families in danger of not being able to pay their rent due to workplace closures, to remain in housing saying, Housing continues to be an area of great need for the families and kids we serve through DHS.

In 2019 when emergency food programs were in jeopardy, Henson was a major catalyst behind family relief saying, Our biggest concern at this point is around food security for the clients we serve in this county. He explained to Ark Valley Voice, the emergency food assistance program is the one at our Salida Community Center. People count on that.

Henson had concern for the people in his department, aware that compassion fatigue can set in. The challenge of that line of work, day after day, and seeing the same problems, perhaps different people. but Dave gave top priority to caring about his people, said Baker. It resonated with them and us. He knew if he took care of them, they would take care of the clients. He will be missed.

The county will plan a memorial gathering to honor Henson but no details have been organized as yet.

Many of us dont live in circumstances that bring us into contact with the DHS, but the public should know that it is a tremendously important department, and Dave navigated that, added Felt. Were all going to miss Dave very much, and hope to be able to share those feelings in a more intentional setting in the weeks ahead.

These scientists are working to extend the life span of pet dogsand their owners – MIT Technology Review

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:04 am

Dogs provide a much better model for studying human aging. They are unique in sharing our environment. Pet dogs live in our homes with us, breathe the same air we do, and often share our exercise routines, to some degree. Theyre eating our food, theyre walking on our lawns with pesticide, theyre drinking whatever is in our water, says Elaine Ostrander, who leads a team studying human and dog genetics at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

They also develop many of the same age-related diseases that we do. Technically, most pet dogs die as a result of euthanasia. But in most of these cases, the animals have cancer, says Kaeberlein. Dogs can also develop heart disease in later life, just like humans. There are some differencesdog brains arent the same as human ones, although the animals do seem to develop a form of dementia. And dogs dont tend to develop vascular diseases as humans do.

But there are plenty of similarities. Both dogs and people experience aging of the immune system and an increased risk of kidney disease as they get older, says Kaeberlein. It seems like at the level of individual age-related diseases, its very, very similar, he says.

One main difference is that aging is a much quicker process in dogsit happens around seven times faster than in humans, though small dogs generally live longer than larger ones. (Its not quite the case that one year of dog life is equivalent to seven human years, however. Dogs seem to age more rapidly than humans do in their first years of life, and the pace slows as they get older.)

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: MS TECH | ENVATO, GETTY. NYPL, NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART

While this can be devastating for devoted owners, it is useful for researchers, who are able to study the effects of potential anti-aging drugs over the entire life spansomething that is much more difficult to achieve in people.

Another unique feature of dogs is their incredible diversity. Only in dogs do we see such extreme differences in size and appearance within a single species. A Great Dane is around 20 times heavier than a Chihuahua, for example. A Pomeranian looks nothing like a Staffordshire bull terrier.

This variation makes the animals particularly fascinating to geneticists like Ostrander. Dogs were only domesticated around 30,000 years ago, and most breeds have only been around since the Victorian times, she says. It was around the mid-1800s that modern dog breeding took off, and owners bred dogs for aspects of their appearance, such as a curly coat or a flat face. Breeders essentially selected dogs with genes for these features.

Because many such modifications only occurred in the last hundred or so years, genetic differences between todays dog breeds are likely to have a significant impact on these traitsand on the risks of certain diseases that vary between breeds.

Proven Ways to Reverse Diabetes, Say Experts Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:03 am

If you're living with type 2 diabetes, there is hope: While the disease cannot be "cured", it can be put into remission. "In the past, type 2 diabetes was thought to be a progressive disease with no hope for reversal or remission," says Adele Hite, PhD, MPH, RDN. "People were and sometimes still are taught to 'manage' type 2 diabetes, rather than to try to reverse the underlying process. But now people with type 2 diabetes can hope to regain their health!" Here are five ways to put type 2 diabetes into remission, according to doctors. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.

Research shows a healthy low-carb diet can stabilize blood sugar. "Many people with type 2 diabetes are now choosing a diet based primarily on low-carb foods, and many clinicians are catching on as well," says Dr. Hite. "A person with type 2 diabetes will often notice that, starting with the first low-carb meal, their blood sugar improves. The need for medications, especially insulin, is usually dramatically reduced. Substantial weight loss and health marker improvements often follow. Finally, people usually feel better and have more energy and alertness. Choosing foods low in carbs is an effective way to help you control your blood sugar and is safe for most people. However, if you are taking medications for your diabetes, you must work with your healthcare provider to adjust your medications when you change your diet since the need for medications, especially insulin, may be greatly reduced."

Losing weight is a highly effective method of putting type 2 diabetes into remission. "The strongest evidence we have suggests that diabetes is mainly put into remission by weight loss," says Diabetes UK. "If you have obesity, you are more likely to put your diabetes into remission if you lose a substantial amount of weight 15kg (33lbs) as quickly and safely as possible following your diagnosis. If you do want to start losing weight quickly to work towards remission, it's important to talk to a healthcare professional before you begin, to make sure it's right for you. Also, you may need to reduce or stop any medications insulin or sulphonylurea, for example before you begin losing weight. Rapid weight loss is not advised if you are a healthy weight, under 18, pregnant, breastfeeding or have ever been diagnosed with an eating disorder."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Regular exercise is essential not only for good health, but for fighting insulin resistance. "By burning calories and reducing fat in your body, you reduce insulin resistance, which brings your blood sugar under control," says Narinder Bajwa, MD. "Building an exercise routine isn't always easy. So if you're struggling, sit down with your provider to create a plan that works best for you."

Research shows a diet of 800 calories a day can help reverse type 2 diabetes. "The low-calorie diet of 800 calories a day is made up of four soups or shakes. These have all the essential vitamins and minerals," says Diabetes UK. "Our findings show that, at 12 months, almost half of participants achieved remission to a nondiabetic state and off anti-diabetic drugs." It's very important that you should NOT try this without medical supervision.

"It's imperative that you adhere to your physician's guidelines because it helps them keep an eye on your progress," says Dr. Bajwa. "It also gives them the opportunity to explore other possible avenues to help reduce your A1c [your average blood sugar over three months] levels."

Are fat burning supplements the answer to your weight loss goals? – Radio 702

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:03 am

Thabo Mdluli spoke to dietician Matome Diale about whether these supplements help with losing weight.

Everyone wants to have their best possible body, and some may turn to supplements to try and help them lose weight.

Thabo Mdluli spoke to dietician Matome Diale about whether these supplements help with losing weight.

According to Diale these supplements do not actually burn fat as they claim, they only suppress your appetite, and they can actually do more harm than good.

Most of them have serious adverse side effects, including high blood pressure, and some people just want to take them over the counter without even thinking about any medical condition they could have.

When it comes to losing weight the only thing that actually works is creating a calorie deficit, which is where you burn more calories in a day than you are consuming, said Diale.

If you want to lose weight you have to manage your diet and exercise levels in order to create this deficit.

In addition to this, in order to have a sustainable, long-term weight loss it has to be done gradually - which is what Diale always suggests to his clients.

The biggest challenge you have with people who want to lose weight is they want to lose weight tomorrow and that does not happen.

When it comes to making any major positive changes to your weight and health there are no shortcuts and it has to be done carefully and safely if you want to see your best results.

Stress can throw off circadian rhythms and lead to weight gain – Medical News Today

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:03 am

Scientists at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York say that stress-induced circadian clock disruptions may influence weight gain.

A study published in June showed that mice with artificially increased stress levels and interrupted hormone releases experienced an increase in fat cell growth. Its results appear in Cell Reports.

The second study, published in August, found that fat cell precursors commit to becoming fat cells only within a few hours at night. This work appears in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences (PNAS).

Mary Teruel, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medicine, was the senior author of both studies.

A lot of forces are working against a healthy metabolism when we are out of circadian rhythm, Dr. Teruel said in a press release. The more we understand, the more likely we will be able to do something about it.

In the Cell Reports study, Dr. Teruel and her team implanted pellets with glucocorticoids, a type of stress-related hormone, in mice. This was to mimic the effects of chronic stress or Cushings disease.

Cushings disease triggers elevated levels of cortisol, the bodys stress hormone.

The pellets released glucocorticoids under the skin of the mice at a steady rate over three weeks. The researchers also observed control mice with typical daily stress hormone fluctuations.

Although all the mice ate the same healthy diet, the mice with pellets ended up weighing over 9% more than the control mice.

The researchers observed whether the weight gain was from fat expansion and found that the brown and white fat of the pellet mice had more than doubled. Their insulin levels spiked as well.

To the teams surprise, the metabolic disturbances kept blood glucose levels low. Further, the disruptions prevented fat from accumulating in the blood or liver.

When the researchers removed the pellets, these changes reversed immediately.

Dr. Teruel explained to MNT: We saw this in our paper, basically, once we stopped flattening the corticoids, [the mice] started reversing [the fat mass gain] and the hyperinsulinemia went away so that increased insulin that seems to be causing the fat mass gains that went away when the restored rhythm.

She added that this study indicates that chronic stress can make weight gain more likely, even with a healthy, low fat diet.

If you stress the animals at the wrong time, it has a dramatic effect. The mice arent eating differently, but a big shift in metabolism causes weight gain, Dr. Teruel said in the release.

Dr. Teruels research team hopes that their findings lead to developing drugs that could help reset circadian rhythms to help people with obesity.

We dont know enough [yet], but one would think cortisol receptor antagonists or [] things that restore the cortisol rhythms would probably help a lot.

Dr. Mary Teruel

Experts understand that flaws in circadian clock genes can alter cell differentiation in fat, immune, skin, and muscle cells.

The PNAS study revealed that even though differentiation happens over a few days, differentiation commitment happens within only a few hours. The findings also show that daily bursts of cell differentiation seem to be limited to evening phases when people are normally resting.

The decision to become a fat cell happens rapidly over 4 hours. It is like a switch, Dr. Teruel said.

Medical News Today discussed this with Dr. Mir Ali, bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California.

Dr. Ali explained how fat cells come to be: Fat cells form from [an] adipocyte progenitor cell or a type of cell that has not differentiated into its final form. The form it takes [to become] a fat cell depends on the hormonal and chemical stimulation it receives.

In the study, Dr. Teruel and her partners used fluorescent markers to observe daily fluctuations of fat cell production.

The researchers attached a red fluorescent protein to a protein that regulates circadian clock genes. They also attached a yellow fluorescent protein to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG), a protein that controls fat cell production.

They discovered that during the rest period of the day, a certain circadian protein CCAAT enhancer binding protein alpha induces a rapid increase in the protein that regulates fat cell production.

The researchers also found that when PPARG levels hit a certain threshold, individual fat precursor cells irreversibly commit to differentiate within only a few hours, which is much faster than the rest phase and the overall multiday differentiation process.

Dr. Teruel and her team believe that working with this time window may open therapeutic strategies to use timed treatment relative to the [circadian] clock to promote tissue regeneration.

Dr. Ali said: These studies are interesting in that they show the timing and length of stimulation affect the formation and growth of fat cells. The implications of this are that if we can find a way to safely influence the cell to grow or not grow, it may affect obesity in humans.

However, he believed that more extensive research is needed to make the studies findings applicable to humans.

Dr. Teruel told MNT that she and her co-authors were just trying to work on basic mechanisms [] Right now, we need to show this is really a mechanism that happens []

The researchers do plan to replicate the studies with people. We are looking at protein ribbons and humans using saliva samples, Dr. Teruel shared with MNT. Were planning to do those kinds of experiments.

Their main objective, she said, is to figure out ways to restore circadian [rhythms].

Dr. Teruel mentioned that currently known strategies, such as meditation and regular sleep in the dark may help.

She expressed hope that there could be some pharmacological ways [to] fix this in the future as well.

B12 found in childrens vitamins is safe heres why – PolitiFact

Posted: August 9, 2022 at 2:15 am

Chewable Flintstones vitamins have been around for generations, outliving the popular cartoon TV show for which they were named. But a video shared on social media claims the childhood supplement is potentially deadly.

"The Toxic Ingredient in Your Kids Vitamins," read the words across the top of the July 28 Facebook video that shared a clip from a podcast. In it, guest Gary Brecka warns against the vitamin B12, which he says is an ingredient in Flintstones and other supplements.

"The most common form of B12 in the world is entirely synthetic. We make it from hydrogen cyanide," said Brecka, who describes himself in his LinkedIn profile as founder of a Florida-based health business. "Its called cyanocobalamin. Its a cyanide-based B12. I mean its hard to believe that were allowed to make vitamins out of hydrogen cyanide in this country, but we are. Flintstones vitamins have cyanocobalamin."

The post was flagged as part of Facebooks efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)

Is it true that childrens vitamins have synthetic cyanide? We reached out to Brecka to ask for more information to support his statements, but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Flintstones vitamins do contain cyanocobalamin, which is man-made B12. But the videos claim that the ingredient is toxic is wrong.

The Mayo Clinic describes B12 as a vitamin that "plays an essential role in red blood cell formation, cell metabolism, nerve function and the production of DNA, the molecules inside cells that carry genetic information."

According to the National Institutes of Health, B12 is naturally present in some foods, notably animal products, and dissolves in water. Its also added to foods or given as a supplement, the agency wrote. In The synthetic form, cyanocobalamin, is usually given to people who have low levels of B12.

NIHs fact sheet for health professionals says B12 has a "low potential for toxicity." The agency notes that cyanocobalamin is also safe no overdosage occurs.

"Even at large doses, vitamin B12 is generally considered to be safe because the body does not store excess amounts," read the fact sheet.

A separate NIH fact sheet, written for consumers, also states that B12 supplements are safe, even at doses higher than recommended and for the same reason: "the body absorbs only a small percentage of it," it says.

Dr. Herman B. Gray, chair of Wayne State Universitys Department of Pediatrics, told PolitiFact that for most people, eating a balanced, healthy diet provides enough B12, and taking a supplement is usually unnecessary. But, he said, "it is safe to take in prescribed dosages, including for children."

Cyanocobalamin is not the same as the poison cyanide, Gray said. Cyanocobalamin has only a molecule of cyanide, which is not enough to cause poisoning.

In an article on B12 supplements, the science and technology news site Gizmodo explained it this way: "Dont panic. The body can deal with small amounts of cyanide, usually by using sodium thiosulfate, converting the cyanide ions to thiocyanate, which you then excrete. Cyanocobalamin is safe, and found in food additives, health supplements and the injections that doctors give patients with anemia."

Gray concurred, noting that B12 has been used safely for decades. "Vitamin B-12 or cyanocobalamin is not toxic," he said.

Our ruling

A video on a Facebook post claims that the synthetic form of B12 found in childrens vitamins is toxic.

Cyanocobalamin is man-made B12, but health organizations and pediatricians say its safe to consume.

We rate this claim False.
