What Is The Volumetrics DietAnd Can It Help You Lose Weight? – Pulse Live Kenya

Posted: March 24, 2020 at 8:44 pm

Luckily, its not too good to be true: Developed by Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., a professor of nutritional sciences and obesity researcher at Penn State, the well-researched Volumetrics diet was named the number-two best diet for weight loss and tied for the number-five best diet overall (out of 40 diets) in the 2018 U.S. News & World Reports Best Diet Rankings . It received high scores from nutrition experts for being safe, effective, and sustainable in the long run.

And, yes, it centers on one fairly simple idea: filling up on fewer calories. The main claim, and premise by which the Volumetrics diet works, is the satiety claim, says Lisa Davis, Ph.D., chief nutrition officer at Terras Kitchen .

The primary focus is filling up on foods that are naturally low in calories and high in fiber or waterthink fruits, veggies, and soups. Since carbohydrates and proteins both provide four calories per gram, and fat provides nine calories per gram, you can eat more [carbs and protein] without the excess calories, she explains, noting that people following the Volumetrics diet can expect to lose up to two pounds per week.

Of course, like most things in life, theres more to the Volumetrics diet than meets the eye. We talked to a few registered dietitians to get the low-down on this eating approach.

If diets with strict rules and restrictions make you crazy, here's your reason to celebrate: You don't have to count calories , measure food, or log points on the diet. "Volumetrics is not a precisely prescribed diet plan, but rather a concept and overarching nutritional approach, says Paul Salter, R.D., nutrition editor for Bodybuilding.com and founder of Fit In Your Dress .

On the Volumetrics diet, food is divided into four groups, he explains. Your goal: Eat mostly foods in groups one and two, be mindful of portion sizes of foods in group three, and minimize choices of foods from group four. And nothing is completely off-limits.

Here's what you might eat in a typical day on the Volumetrics diet, according to Salter:

Of course, the million-dollar question: Is it legit? According to solid scientific research (including a 2016 meta-analysis of 13 studies that found a link between low-density foods and weight loss) and well, good old-fashioned common sense, it works. One of the main reasons why people break their healthy eating is because they get hungry, says Julie Upton, R.D., a registered dietitian and co-founder of Appetite for Health . Since you're still eating a high volume of food on the Volumetrics plan, you avoid those diet-busting hunger pains.

Hundreds of other nutrition studies back this up. In a 2007 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition , researchers randomly assigned 97 obese women to either a low-fat diet or a low-energy-dense, low-fat diet that emphasized fruits and vegetables. After a year, both groups lost weight, but the fruits-and-vegetables dieters lost even more14 pounds compared with 11 pounds. The researchers deemed low-energy-dense diets an effective way to drop pounds and keep them off.

A 2005 study published in Obesity Research , co-authored by the Volumetrics diet creator, Rolls, suggests that a diet high in low-density foods and soup, a staple on the Volumetrics eating plan, leads to substantial weight loss. Another study of 186 women found decreasing energy density is a way to prevent weight gain and obesity in both the short and long term.

Another perk of the Volumetrics diet: The majority of low-calorie, high-volume foods are nutrient-rich , and therefore positively impact your health in a variety of ways, Salter says.

Now, if alarm bells are ringing in your head, you're not alone. As we've written about before, not all high-calorie foods are "bad" for you. In fact, plenty of foods that are high in calories and fat are essential for good health, such as nuts, seeds, avocado, and fatty fish.

One potential drawback to this diet is that it recommends a very low consumption of nuts and seeds (since they are calorically dense), Davis explains. "Nuts and seeds provide monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids; both beneficial for cardiovascular and cognitive health."

This is why almonds can help you lose weight:

Plus, like many diet plans, it can also be difficult to dine out on the Volumetrics diet, since so many restaurants and food services prepare their food with high-calorie, high-fat butters and oils, Davis points out. But no foods are 100 percent prohibited on this dietit's more about putting the principles into practice.

First, you'll want to check out Rolls' book, The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet . Then, you'll want to make meal prep your BFF. "Buy all of your produce and prep a lot of it over the weekend," Upton suggests. You'll also want to find some great soup recipes. "Broth-based soups are very low in energy density and if you eat them before a meal, they can help you eat less," she says.

" Planning out your meals for the week ahead of time will be crucial to your success," Salter adds. "Try to keep some high-volume, convenient foods handy too, such as fresh fruit and plenty of low-fat dairy. Once you return from grocery shopping, make food prep a priority so that theres no thinking required at meal timesall you need to do is heat and eat!"

(Get the latest health, weight loss, fitness, and sex intel delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up for our "Daily Dose" newsletter.)

Finally, while it's not an essential component, the diet plan does encourage more movement throughout the day. There's no rigorous exercise program, but it does suggest simply increasing the amount of steps you take per day with the end goal of reaching around 10,000 steps, Davis says.

The bottom line? If the thought of prepping and eating more low-density foods, skipping calorie counts, and simply moving more sounds doable, you may be the perfect candidate to give the Volumetrics diet a try.

Fitness centers aim to stay in shape amid closures as clients look to stay healthy – Southernminn.com

Keith Bense of St. Peter, hoped to work out March 17 at Live Well Fitness Center at Rivers Edge Hospital, but it closed its doors that day at noon, after the governors statewide order closed all health and fitness centers.

Its too bad it had to close, Bense said. I like to try to get up here four of five times a week. (Ive been doing that) for about six years.

Bense, a teachers aide at St. Peter High School and retired teacher at Le Sueur-Henderson Schools, started working out to lose weight and rehab his knee after surgery. He had his left knee replaced six years ago and the second three years ago. He also stays active by riding his bike, lifting weights, a lot of walking and playing baseball with the St. Peter over 50 team.

His predicament is familiar for many across the region, as gyms and fitness centers are forced to close.

Rivers Edge Fitness Center

It was sunny and 44 degrees March 17, which made it a good afternoon for riding a bike. But when its bad weather, Bense cant safely ride his bike outside, and he likes to work out on the stationary bikes in the fitness center. However, he understood the reason for the closing: to limit groups of people as part of efforts to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic virus.

The fitness center at Rivers Edge normally is open from 4 a.m. to midnight. In addition, four group exercise classes on arthritis, balance and Parkinsons disease taught by Live Well Fitness Exercise Physiologist Nicole Boelter have been postponed. Boelter also understands the importance of avoiding the virus, but she emphasized the importance of people staying active for the health benefits.

Its especially important for older people, who makes up the majority of the members at Live Well Fitness.

We understand the importance of staying active, Boelter said. Of course, Its also especially important for older people who are more at risk of getting sick or dying from the virus to stay safe and healthy at home.

She has designed home exercise ideas as the weeks progress, and she is putting ideas to stay active on the fitness centers Facebook Page. Boelter also is helping people in her classes to keep moving by emailing videos and written explanations of exercises.

She suggests people use any home exercise equipment they have and get up and walk every 30 minutes. Live Well Fitness could reopen March 27, but thats the earliest possible, and it will be closed until further notice, depending on the governors directive.

Snap Fitness, Waseca

Snap Fitness center in Waseca had to shut its doors, too.

Members are disappointed that we closed, Manager Jarius Volkman said. Its for the best to have it in check for the next couple of weeks. More than half of our members are 65 and over. Its better to be safe than sorry. One person can ruin it for everybody.

Volmann said they already were having problems with people not following the rules of keeping a safe their distance from each other.

The club also cancelled eight classes including a senior fitness class taught by Volkman, running six days a week with 20 to 30 people. In the meantime, Snap Fitness is offering members an app for free, which includes workout videos on Facebook so they can continue to work out. And, with the weather getting warmer, Volkman said people can exercise outside more by going for a walk or run to stay active and healthy.

Volkman said Snap Fitness is considering reimbursing members for each day they lose in their membership fees.

However, he noted, For each day its closed, were losing income.

It has been a busy time for Volkman, because his wife, Courtney, just had a baby Thursday. They were concerned about possibly getting infected, so they induced their childs birth. Courtney is a nurse at Mankato Clinic.

The baby is healthy and my wife has three months off paternity leave, so were doing well, Volkman said.

Cannon Strength, Northfield

Cannon Strength fitness center in Northfield is adapting to the closure. The club allowed members to take home small exercises equipment, such as barbells, weights, medicine balls and exercise bands.

We opened up the gym Tuesday for members to take equipment home, owner Donavan Bellcourt said, noting that 10 people took advantage of the opportunity.

The club also is going virtual, offering home workout programs, plus workout videos on Facebook.

We closed all operations and went to an online presence. In the end, it will be for the better to shut down for a couple of weeks, Belcourt said.

Belcourt said they have gotten a good response from people in the Northfield community to the online workouts.

Its a way to reach the people; we reached more people than before.

Cannon Strength also offered 10 organized group fitness classes which were cancelled.

Its obviously necessary to close, Belcourt said. If it doesnt reopen soon, businesses will have to come up with more creative ways to serve our members. We hope people will come back to the gym and potentially have a surge in business. Fitness centers have to adapt and change up how to serve customers virtually one-on-one and at home. Most people adapt and make do.

Belcourt said his business will see a drop in income with the current state of the economy, but he added that, Were in the middle of a large expansion in a new building with four times the amount of space by April 1, so the center is looking to the future, regardless.

10 Qualities of Great Leaders – Thrive Global

Posted: March 24, 2020 at 6:48 am

The subject of leadership can never be exhausted and that is why there are always books coming out on it. My favorite definition of leadership is from Stephen Covey who said thatLeadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves.

The responsibility of every leader is to keep affirming the worth and potential of every person in the organization. This will then lead to people performing at their best which gives the organization greater success.

I have identified the key qualities of leaders which I believe can help every leader get better. Not every leader can have all these qualities but an awareness of them can increase the qualities in us. Here are the key qualities of great leaders.

Vision

Across all the leadership studies done the most important quality of a leader is setting the vision of an organization. As it is often said without vision people perish. Creating an exciting picture about the future is a fundamental requirement of a leader. The best example of a vision is the one set by John F.Kennedy when he said the following on May 25th1961I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. This is the best example of a vision as it is precise, simple and easy to understand. More importantly it is measurable. The key for a vision is it has to be simple yet it should be well beyond our comfort zones. The only way to be truly excited about our lives is to set BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) and excite ourselves and the people we serve. A nice metaphor is if we have nearsightedness we need lenses or glasses to get a clear vision. The same holds true for our lives once we get clear on where we want to be heading our vision becomes clear and we can build a great life. A personal vision doesnt have to be big all the time. A vision to be a best parent is also a worthy vision and if it excites you that is great. As Abdul Kalam famously saidDream is notthat which you see while sleeping it is something that doesnotlet you sleep.

Integrity

This is one of the essential qualities required for an effective leader. Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. It is the ability to stand by the truth even when it is tough. If we live with integrity then our fears reduce because we are honest with ourselves. Gandhi said it beautifullyOne man cannot do right in one department of life whilst he is occupied in doing wrong in any other departments. Life is one indivisible whole. He also said What I say and what I do are in total harmony. Anyone with high integrity has great peace of mind as they dont have anything to hide and it also helps in developing resilience. Of course none of us are perfect but we can always aim for high ideals and be as closely aligned as we possibly can.

Passion

Passion makes your days fly. Once a leader breathes and lives passionately it rubs off on others as well. An example of passion is Roger Federer. As of this writing he is already considered the greatest tennis player that ever lived but he still takes each tournament as a challenge, and practices with the same enthusiasm. Just imagine how our lives would improve if we took every workday as a chance to show case our brilliance in our field of endeavor. Our days would fly and also the line between work and play would blur and we would see our life as a whole. We always here leadership gurus saying do what you love but the fact is you may love singing but you cannot become a singer unless you have the competence to do it well. So I think love has to be married with your area of competence and then your days will be filled with passion. For a start leaders should love their job and see the benefits it provides in terms of finance, sense of worth and making a difference. Then see the difference it makes on each of the members of the organization.

Discipline

Discipline is the ability to do what you should do when you should do it whether you feel like it or not. As Jim Rohn saidWe must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.We all know what we need to do to achieve success but we need tons of discipline to follow through on our commitments. Researchers have confirmed that every expert across various fields including legends like Bill Gates, Mozart, Tiger Woods have spent 10000 hours of deliberate practice before they were called a genius. This reminds us on how much effort is required to reach ourEverest. We cant stop exercising after 10 days because we didnt lose weight. It takes discipline to stick to ourlong term goals but we have to evaluate the reasons for what we want. If we want to live to be 100 so that we can contribute to the world, take care of our family and see our grandchildren blossom then we need to take care of our health. In each area of life we need to find the reasons to keep going and once we find compelling reasons for each one of our goals discipline is automatic.

Goals

I have read a lot of books on leadership, management and success. The main takeaway from all of them is you need to have goals to succeed. It is such a simple point but not everyone has taken the time to write out their goals in all areas of our life. Once we have defined our goals we can wake up with the enthusiasm needed to take our life to the next level. Once we achieve our main goal it is good to pause and reflect on a job well done but we can truly be happy only when we set even more challenging goals to keep going further. You may not reach all your goals by writing them down but it gives you a much better chance at achievement. We dont lose anything by writing down our goals but we gain everything once we achieve them. Set financial, personal, health, work goals and your life will go to the next level. An example of a goal is I run a half marathon in 2 Hrs 30 Min by Sep 1st2019.

Lead by example

The leader sees things through the eyes of his followers. He puts himself in their shoes and helps them make their dreams come true. The leader does not say, Get going! Instead he says, Lets go! and leads the way.He does not walk behind with a whip; he is out in front with a banner.-Wilfred Peterson. You cannot be great without starting. First leadership principle is to lead yourself before you lead others. There is a story of a woman going to Gandhi and saying please advise my son to stop eating sugar and Gandhi replied bring him after 3 days. When the woman visited Gandhi after 3 days she asked why did you ask me to come after three days he responded because 3 days back I was still eating sugar. It just goes to show that you cant advise other people to do something which you are not doing. Yes this is simple but the only way to get a following is to set an example for others to follow. Set higher standards for yourself and keep on raising the bar. Never settle for the ordinary. Excellence is a journey so stay committed to it for a life time.

Continuous Learning

This is one of the best kept secrets of all effective leaders. Effective leaders are always looking for opportunities to learn more, be more and achieve more. With the explosion of technology and the rapid changes happening in the market place it is imperative for a leader to be ahead of the curve by constantly seeking to improve and stay current. Find out the experts in your field, read their blogs, read their books, listen to their podcasts, share what you have learnedand keep on learning. Take industry certificationsinyour field of expertise. All I have learned, I learned from books.Abraham Lincoln and another great quote from Henry FordAnyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.

Courage

As Winston Churchill saidCourage is rightly considered the foremost of virtues for upon it all others depend.Courage is an important quality of a leader. You have to conquer your fears and stay courageous in the face of adversity. For example Jack Welch when he took over GE made the bold declaration GE will only remain in businesses where they can be Number 1 or Number 2 in that market. This is indeed a bold declaration and a great example of courage. The only way we can develop courage is to take calculated risks and keep taking them regularly to eventually reduce the fears that are holding us back.

Love Life

I think if you truly want to inspire others you need to be inspired. You need to love life and once you dothat ittranslates into a passion for everything life offers. We all have the same 24 hours it is what we do with it that matters.Once we love our life we actually will manage ourselves better. I like what Benjamin Franklin saidDont squander time as they are the stuff life is made of.Yes I am not going to talk about time management separately because if you love life and want to live it to the fullest you will automatically use your time wisely. Once you love life it will obviously catch on with the followers and this creates a ripple effect which creates happy followers who will in turn into great leaders themselves.

Patience

Patience is truly the icing on the cake. Most of us are impatient and we want immediate results. We exercise for a week and dont see any results. Of course anything worthwhile takes a long time. A brilliant career doesnt happen overnight and for every single accomplishment of ours it is patience that has been the key to our success. Those who are in it for the long haul are all patient. One analogy is just imagine an architect building a beautiful cathedral when they start there is nothing and they build it brick by brick. It requires enormous patience to create art and produce remarkable results. Lets decide to build our patience muscles to truly get the most of ourselves.

I am especially impressed by the optimism of Nelson Mandela even when he was in prison and didnt even know whether he will ever see the freedom he desired. This is in his words (I came across this in the book In His Own Words Nelson Mandela) when he was in prisonI always knew that one day I would feel once again the grass under my feet and walk in the sunshine as a free man. This shows his high appreciation for life and his optimistic outlook.

There you have it the 10 qualities that can help us become better leaders. Thanks for reading this post.

7 Safe, Smart, Sanitary Habits to Use When Ordering Takeout and Delivery – Yahoo Lifestyle

Posted: March 24, 2020 at 6:48 am

Ordering food offers welcome relief from cooking and cleaning, so heres how to protect yourself and your family against coronavirus if you do get takeout.

Right now, many Americans are proving themselves to be model citizens by staying home and social distancing, as encouraged by both federal and state officials, to help slow the rate of COVID-19 transmission. While these practices are meant for everyones health and safety, no one said it was going to be easy.

Besides the obvious health concerns, financial impact, and lack of social interaction, one of the largest obstacles for people in voluntary quarantine has been figuring out how to feed themselves safely. With many confined to their homes for weeks, the mere idea of eating canned beans again is enough to cause distresslet alone the larger anxieties and uncertainties of the moment.

For folks who need a break from cooking and cleaning, restaurant takeout and delivery (as well as grocery drop-offs) are still available in many places. In fact, these food options are great ways to help keep your favorite independent restaurants and businesses afloat while bringing a little variety to your daily quarantine diet.

RELATED: Stuck Inside? These Five Simple Pantry Staples Can Be the Foundation of Some Very Vibrant Dishes

In short, yes, if restaurants and grocers are offering curb-side pickup or home delivery, its OK to do so. However, ordering from outside your own kitchen comes with a few caveats. Your go-to chicken parm order from the family-owned restaurant down the street is only worth itfor you and for themif you take extra measures to protect against the spread of coronavirus.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) FAQ section reassures that it cannot be passed through food: Currently there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19. That said, we do know the virus can still live temporarily on commonly touched surfaces. According to a recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, this is how long the virus appears to be able to survive on respective surfaces:

With these findings in mind, follow extra safe and sanitary precautions when ordering in.

1. Avoid ordering in altogether if you or any family/housemates are sick, exhibiting symptoms, elderly, or more at risk for contracting COVID-19 (heres what to make instead).

2. Avoid touching public surfaces (like door handles) by choosing curb-side pickup only. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60 percent alcohol content) immediately following a pickup exchange, and avoid touching your face before sanitizing hands.

3. When possible, choose contact-free delivery options when ordering in. Many food delivery services, including Postmates, DoorDash, Caviar, Grubhub, and Seamless, are giving members a no-contact drop-off option, where couriers will leave orders on the doorstep and let customers know theyve done so. If you're ordering in directly from a restaurant, give the courier special instructions to leave your order at the door.

4. Leave cardboard boxes and packaging outside for 24 hoursor, even better, immediately take them out to the recycling.

5. Transfer food to your own clean dishes and cutlery to serve and eat, and immediately throw out/recycle all containers and packaging.

6. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after eating.

7. Disinfect the surfaces in your home that come in contact with any delivery bags, containers, etc.

All of this is not to scare you (the idea of germs capability to survive on surfaces shouldnt be new), but simply to reiterate how important it remains to follow responsible hygiene habits when getting food products delivered to you right now. Restaurants and delivery services are being as careful and hygienic as possible to make sure you stay fed (and they stay in business), so dont undo all their efforts once the food arrives at your door.

IBS and Popcorn: Do They Go Together? – Healthline

Posted: March 24, 2020 at 6:48 am

Popcorn is a popular, tasty, and healthy snack thats very high in fiber.

Its made by heating kernels of a type of corn known as Zea mays everta, causing pressure to build and the starch within to expand until it finally pops.

However, some people with digestive problems, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), may wonder if popcorn is suitable for them.

This article explains whether people with IBS can safely eat popcorn.

IBS is a common condition that causes stomach pain related to bowel movements or changes in stool frequency or appearance. It affects about 1014% of the global population (1, 2, 3, 4).

There are three types of IBS. Theyre classified by the most dominant symptom (3):

Although many people experience constipation or diarrhea at some point in their lives, people with IBS experience symptoms at least 1 day per week (3).

The causes of IBS arent fully known and can differ from person to person (1).

Research suggests that people with IBS often have increased gut sensitivity and changes to gut-brain interactions, gut motility, immune activity, and natural bacterial populations that make up the gut microbiome (1, 4, 5).

Additionally, psychological and social stress, genetics, diet, and drugs could play a role (1).

About 7090% of people with IBS find that specific foods or meals can trigger their symptoms (1, 6).

Commonly reported trigger foods include those high in dietary fiber, caffeine, spices, fats, lactose, gluten, certain types of fermentable carbs, and alcohol (7).

IBS is a condition characterized by stomach pain related to bowel movements or changes to stool frequency or appearance. It may be constipation or diarrhea dominant, or a combination of the two. Food is a common trigger for many people.

Dietary fiber is made up of complex carbs that are poorly digested, reaching the colon almost unchanged (8).

Its been found to have both positive and negative effects on symptoms of IBS (4).

Popcorn is very high in dietary fiber, with 1 cup (8 grams) of air-popped popcorn providing 1.16 grams of the nutrient (9).

The fiber in popcorn is made up primarily of hemicellulose, cellulose, and a small amount of lignan meaning the majority of the fiber is insoluble (10, 11).

Insoluble fiber is a type of fiber that isnt digested and draws water into the bowel, increasing stool volume and decreasing the time it takes for stools to move through the gut (4).

Higher intakes of insoluble dietary fiber were thought to benefit people with IBS-C. However, studies in humans havent found it to have a significant effect (4, 8, 12, 13, 14).

Additionally, insoluble fiber increases the formation of gas, which can lead to worse symptoms of bloating, distension, and flatulence in some people with IBS (4, 8).

Therefore, if you experience such symptoms, it may be better to avoid foods high in insoluble fiber and include sources of soluble fiber, such as psyllium, oats, and citrus fruits, instead (8).

However, if you dont have problems with foods high in insoluble fiber, you should be able to continue to enjoy popcorn.

Popcorn is high in insoluble fiber, which can cause bloating, distension, and flatulence in some people with IBS. If these symptoms are a problem, it may be better to choose foods high in soluble fiber, such as psyllium, oats, apples, and citrus fruits, instead.

Recent research suggests that certain types of carbs arent well tolerated by people with IBS. These carbs are known as fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides, and polyols, or FODMAPs for short (15, 16).

They arent well absorbed and cause an increase in water secretion and fermentation in the gut, which produces gas and can trigger symptoms in some people with IBS (1).

FODMAPs are commonly found in wheat, some dairy, and some fruits and vegetables (1, 16).

A low FODMAP diet has been shown to improve some symptoms, such as pain, bloating, gas, and stool consistency, in about 75% of people, particularly those with IBS-D and IBS-M (2, 6, 17, 18).

Popcorn is naturally low in FODMAPs, making it a suitable food for people on a low FODMAP diet to manage their symptoms.

A low FODMAP serving of popcorn is up to 7 cups (56 grams) of popped popcorn. This is more than the 45 cups typically recommended as a standard serving size.

Its important to note that regular sweet corn is not a low FODMAP food, as it contains higher amounts of the sugar alcohol sorbitol, which gives it a sweeter taste than the type of corn used for popcorn (19).

FODMAPs refers to a group of highly fermentable carbs found in wheat, dairy, and some fruits and vegetables that can trigger symptoms in people with IBS. Popcorn is low in FODMAPs, making it a suitable food for those on a low FODMAP diet.

Although popcorn itself is generally suitable for many people with IBS, certain preparation methods and toppings can make it less ideal.

Popcorn is naturally very low in fat, with 1.5 grams of fat in a 4-cup (32-gram) serve. However, popping it in oil or butter can make it a high fat food, with 12 times the fat in the same number of cups (9, 20).

Studies suggest that fats can worsen symptoms, such as stomach pain, gas, and indigestion, in people with IBS. Therefore, its best to eat air-popped popcorn (7).

Additionally, some people find that spices, such as chili, cayenne pepper, or curry, trigger symptoms, particularly in those with IBS-D. Although the evidence is limited, if spices are a trigger for you, its best to avoid these in popcorn toppings (7).

Likewise, certain home-style and commercial toppings are high in FODMAPs. These include honey, high fructose corn syrup, sweeteners, onion powder, and garlic powder. If buying commercial popcorn, be sure to check the ingredient list for these triggers.

IBS-friendly toppings include salt, fresh or dried herbs, spices (if they arent a trigger for you), small amounts of dark chocolate (5 squares or 30 grams), and cinnamon and sugar.

Preparing popcorn in oil or butter, adding certain spices or high FODMAP toppings could trigger symptoms in people with IBS. Its best to stick to air-popped popcorn and IBS-friendly toppings.

Many people with IBS tolerate popcorn well. However, if you find that it triggers symptoms, here are some low FODMAP, IBS-friendly alternatives:

Keep in mind that every person is different, so any food choices should be based on your own symptoms, triggers, diet, and lifestyle.

If popcorn is a trigger food for your symptoms, there are other IBS-friendly snacks that are good alternatives. These include kale chips, edamame, roasted pumpkin seeds, olives, nuts, and some fruits.

Many people with IBS can enjoy popcorn, as its a low FODMAP food and a great source of fiber.

However, if you have symptoms triggered by eating insoluble fiber, such as gas and bloating, you may want to limit or avoid popcorn.

Its also important to be careful with how you prepare popcorn, as cooking with a high amount of fat and using toppings unsuitable for IBS could also trigger symptoms.

If youre sensitive to popcorn, there are plenty of great-tasting alternatives for a movie-night snack, including kale chips, edamame, roasted pumpkin seeds, olives, nuts, and some fruits.

Posted: March 24, 2020 at 6:48 am

The coronavirus pandemic is changing all our lives including the way we shop as the Governments new social distancing measures strike home.

In the past week Ocado, the online grocery retailer that delivers Waitrose and own-brand products, was forced to suspend its website as it struggled to cope with demand, while some other well-known delivery services such as Abel & Cole and Oddbox announced they would be temporarily unable to take new orders.

Abel & Cole and Ocado relaunched their sites over the weekend, with queues for the latter into the thousands.

Yet there are many more small, independent companies worth knowing about that deliver sensible quantities of high-quality food to our doorsteps and were not just talking fruit and veg.

Fresh pasta, meat and nutritious pre-prepared meals can also be safely and easily delivered straight to your home or to the homes of those you can't spend time with at the moment.

The companys free delivery radius takes in areas within the M25, always between 11pm and 6am, to doorsteps or an apartment concierge.

People can wake up in the morning, their cooler bags are there, each labelled and air-sealed, says Rose. Our deliveries are already no contact.

Restaurant closures have seen the brands suppliers receiving far fewer orders than they were even a few days ago, with one usually taking 100,000 in nightly orders taking only 10 per cent of that last night, says Rose.

Our suppliers are fully stocked and, as an essential service, we plan to deliver through any lockdown.

Fresh Fitness Food plans cost from 23 a day. NHS workers can get 50 per cent off, while anyone working remotely during the coronavirus outbreak can use the code WFH10 for 10 per cent off.

The brand delivers three days worth of meals to your doorsteps on Mondays and Thursdays, at 10 per delivery.

Co-founder Kris Tyrell says: We previously got investment, around two months ago, so sales have gone up since then. But in the past week theyve doubled.
