How to Workout and Train on a Vegan Diet – The Beet

One of the groups that might hesitate to go plant-based or vegan, due to their usual training routines, are hard-core athletes. Yet with a little knowledge, it turns out that what they thinkwill be the most significant challengeswhen they start following a vegan or plant-based diet are actually notobstacles at all. (One such perceived challenge is where do you get your protein, or how do you eat enough calcium, minerals and healthy calories to sustain an athlete's workout schedule?) These so-called challenges are easily met, with planning.

Athletes, as it turns out, tend to be great at planning, and are often obsessive about their training regimens. Any athlete, whether a marathoner, a yoga devotee or an exercise-class junkie, knows that an important component of reachingone's physical goalsis sticking toa clean, nutrient-dense diet plan.

So if youve been thinking about your nutritional needs with respect to your training for the past few months or years, and you want to bring your fitness and health to the next level, you could be ready to take the leap to a vegan diet. It just takes some strategic planning.

So many athletes have watched The Game Changers, the documentary about pro and elite athletes who are plant-based, from Novak Djokovic to Olympians, Strongman Champions and Venus Williams, all of whom attest to the fact that plant-based eating helps them recover faster and play at the top of their game.

Sports dietitian Torey Armul, MS, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, has counseled pro athletes, weekend warriors, and marathoners on how to reach their goals with the help of sound sports nutrition. I've always been very interested in the performance side of nutrition, as an athlete in college and later as a marathoner, she says. She has found that plant-based eating and training, go hand in hand.

I think people who are vegetarianor vegan tend to be somewhat more health-conscious and they've done some researchso they often have a leg up on understanding nutrition, Armul says. For vegan athletes, [training hard and eating healthfuly] can certainly be accomplished but the program has to be done well, to optimize performance and keep that person healthy as an athlete and an individual.

Here are the so-called challenges that vegan athletes face, and the tools to overcome them

Were not going to sugar coat this for you: Being a vegan athlete is challenging at first, and it does take some discipline and planning to get used to eating a new way. Armul recommends working with a registered dietician, especially at the beginning of your program, just to get yourself set up properly. Youll have to focus on your diet as an important part of the training, she says. But once you get the hang of it, eating legumes, grains, vegetables and nuts and seeds and getting your protein from tofu, tempeh, soybeans and other plant-based sources, becomes as natural as lacing up your sneakers in the morning.

In addition to training meals, youll need to plan out your pre-race nutrition and post-race meals, especially during events that offer fuel you have never tried before. You won't want to just grab any old electrolyte gel or sportsbeans mid-run to replace your electrolytes and energy. Check the labels to make sure they're vegan and dont contain gelatin or honey. When you're exercising, you want a simple carb because that's what your muscles are utilizing, says Armul. Make sure you have that readily available throughoutyour training. Stick with your own plant-based snacks like fruit, pretzels, crackers, and even almond butterand carry your own fuelthe race so you can eat what you're familiar with throughout the event.

A vegetarian athlete can take in dairy products and eggs as sources of protein to fuel their workouts. Vegans need to pick plant-based sources like beans, legumes and nut butter. Look to grains, says Armul. People are surprised that rice, grains, and flour have protein. You can also rely on nuts, peas, amaranth, quinoa, seeds, and soy products for protein. And while you can supplement with plant-based protein powders, which contain vitamins and minerals, keep in mind when it comes to food versus supplementation, food is always better, says Armul. Dont let supplementation be your crutch for when you dont feel like making healthy vegan meals.

This important vitamin is often found in meat and animal products and is also added to many foods that we may not be eating, so its one supplement that vegan athletes need toconsider adding to their diet. Vitamin B12 is vital in making red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout the body, as well as DNA synthesis and helping with neurological functions.

It's very important for runners especially, (who are more likely to have borderline anemia) to have enough vitamin B12 in their system in order to help replenish their cellular health, says Armul. You can find vitamin B12 supplements in foods like soymilk, grains, and some cereals. If you're not seeing supplementation in your foods, then Id recommend a vitamin B12 supplement to help reach the recommended daily allowance of 2.4mcg, Armul says.

Youve probably heard of vitamin D referred to as the sunshine vitamin, as we synthesize vitamin D after exposure to sunlight. But vitamin D is also found in animal products and fortified foods. Its an important vitamin for calcium absorption in the body and bone health. Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that vitamin D combined with vitamin K may help exercisers with recovery. Vegans can find vitamin D in fortified cereals and orange juice. If youre concerned that youre not getting enough D in your diet, consider adding a daily supplement. Its recommended adults get 600 IU vitamin D daily.

Creatine is an amino acid found in foods such as meat, fish, and poultry. Your body converts this amino acid into something called phosphocreatine, which is stored in the muscles and used for energy, Amul explains.

It's clear in research that people who eat vegan and vegetarian diets tend to be low in creatine, says Armul. We also know that creatine has performance-enhancing benefits. It can help with short-term, high-intensity exercise, with strength, and it helps with muscle rebuilding and repair. So if you have performance goals as a vegan athlete, it may make sense to look into creatine supplementation.

If you're a serious athlete, you're working hard, and you're an otherwise healthy vegan, it doesn't hurt to add a supplement to make sure you have that safety net available since creatine is so important for exercise, says Armul. Creatine supplements can be taken as pills or powders, just read the label carefully to make sure its a vegan creatine source.

When it comes to fueling up before, during and after their training, vegan athletes can never just assume it'll work out with respect to finding quality food options.Just as they never train without thinking ahead, Armul says, they need to think about their diet as well. Being a vegan athlete requires preparation and planning ahead, but it is doable. And we would add, worth it.

The 19 Most Inspiring Weight Loss Success Stories of 2019 …

People want to lose weight for a whole slew of different reasons. Some want to feel better about the way they look and give their self-esteem a boost, while others aim to stop using food as a coping mechanism for emotional struggles. Kevin Gendreau, MD, 31, wrestled with a food addiction for more than a decade, and was 306 pounds at his heaviest.

"I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, hypertension, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, and sleep apnea, among other things," Gendreau told Best Life in October. "I knew they were all because of my eating habits, but I just couldn't stop."

But when his sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2016, it became a wake-up call for him to make his physical health a priority."What she was going through wasn't her choice," he said. "What I was doing to myself was."

By cutting out all the junk food and replacing it with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and protein, Gendreau lost 125 pounds in 18 months.

"The best advice that I can give is to find a motivation to change," he said. "For me, it was my sister getting sick and needing to be there for her kids, but it could be anything. Once you find that reason and commit to it, you're good to go."

Think it's too late to change your body once you're over 50? Think again. In October, 73-year-old Joan MacDonald became an internet inspiration after showing off her incredible transformation.

"For many decades, I was more often overweight than at a healthy weight," MacDonald told The Daily Mail. "I was on medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and acid reflux. My arthritis was acting up pretty bad."

Concerned about her health, MacDonald's daughter taught her mom how to use her iPhone to track her meals and exercise activity. That tool helped drive her to eat more protein and healthy fats, and go to the gym four or five days a week. And after making those major changes to her lifestyle, MacDonald lost 55 pounds in a year, gained plenty of muscle, and now helps others reach their fitness goals, no matter how old they are.

"For those who truly feel at a loss, I'd say change one thing with your food intake, one exercise to do, and each week add something new," she said. "Don't expect miracles right away, take it slow and steady but keep building."

Amber Neale spent most of her young-adult life in a pattern of losing weight on various diets, and then gaining it all back. In January 2017, she hit 325 poundsher second heaviest weightand decided to seek treatment from a mental health professional to address her unhealthy eating habits.

"I realized I needed help when I found myself living the same dismal day over and over againand food was my only oasis," Neale told Women's Healthin April 2019. "It took therapy to make me realize how awful my eating habits had become: I ate from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed."

Once she dealt with her anxiety, depression, and binge-eating disorder, Neale was able to cut out fast food, reduce her portion sizes, and start exercising daily for 45 minutes. She lost 190 pounds in two years, and today, she says she takes things "one meal, or one moment, at a time."

When Joey Morganelli was 16 years old, he watched his father die of a heart attack right in front of him, only three years after losing his mother to cancer. Looking for a way to cope with such tragedy and loss, he turned to food. By the time he graduated high school, he weighed 400 pounds.

Luckily, Morganelli had people around him who cared about his wellbeing and were concerned by what they saw. In his freshman year of college, his microbiology professor pulled him aside to express concerns about his health, and asked him to watch the 2011 documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. The film had a major effect on Morganelli and slowly but surely, he replaced fast food with healthy, home-cooked meals. Eventually, he became more committed, going on a vegan diet, and by mid-2018, he had lost 150 pounds.

In January 2019, he wrote on Instagram that even though losing weight is hard, what's harder is facing yourself and dealing with the issues that drove you to overeat to begin with. "Give yourself a fair fight and take that blindfold off," he wrote. "It will propel you into places you never thought you could be."

We all know alcohol contains plenty of calories, has little nutritional value, and can impede weight-loss and other lifestyle goals we set for ourselves. But a viral post by Instagram influencer Jelly Devote really showed just how much curbing heavy alcohol consumption in favor of drinking more water can help you lose weight.

The photo on the left shows her at 21, during her college partying days, when she was drinking beer and cider with abandon. Now 27, Devote exercises, drinks in moderation, and feels like she's aging in reverse as a result.

"I'm a new person and I feel better both on the inside and about my outside," she wrote on Instagram in February.

When Mary Jane O'Toole got engaged to her longtime boyfriend in 2016, she couldn't have been more excited about it. Weighing 281 pounds, however, made picking out a wedding dress somewhat of a disheartening process.

"I didn't want to buy a plus-size wedding dress, because they cost way more than straight sizes," O'Toole told Peoplein April. "I felt like I was paying this fat taxI didn't have the ability to buy affordable clothes because I was bigger."

When she and her husband-to-be saw photos of themselves from a trip to Disney World, they made the decision to lose weight together and began tracking their calories and meals with the the app LoseIt!

O'Toole lost 75 pounds in the first year, and another 25 once the couple began incorporating exercise into their routine. By the time the wedding rolled around earlier this year, she had lost a total of 135 pounds and was able to walk down the aisle in the dress of her dreams.

Hunter Croteau had to go to the doctor to find out he was 367 pounds, because the scale at his home was no longer capable of weighing him. Once he graduated high school and with the help of his family, Croteau threw himself into a healthy diet. But two weeks in, he fell off the wagon.

"I knew lying in bed that night that I was not going to go back on the diet the next morning, and I needed to make a drastic step," Croteau told Yahoo! Lifestyle in July. His doctor suggested getting sleeve gastrectomy, which typically removes 80 percent of the stomach and therefore limits the amount of food a person can consume.

Croteau decided to have the surgery, even though he was "extremely nervous" going into the operation. "You're going into this building specifically because you're fat," he said. "It's almost like you're coming to terms with it in front of the world. You're saying, 'I need help. I can't do this on my own.'"

About a month after the surgery, Croteau began going to the gym, and he became increasingly interested in the science of fitness. Thanks to his workout routine and portion control, he lost 175 pounds in eight months and is now studying to become a certified personal trainer.

While he believes that the surgery was "totally worth it," Croteau also credits his love of exercise with helping him keep the weight off and stay in shape. "You need to fall into a habit of something you can maintain, something you enjoy," he said.

By the time she was 28, Stacy Blair was already beginning to have health problems due to her weight.

"I was taking medication for high blood pressure, myasthma was getting worse, and it was physically painful to walk or stand for more than five minutes," Blair told Women's Health in October.

For the first time in her life, she was motivated to lose weight not for the sake of looking good, but for personal wellness and improving her healthan approach that changed everything.

"I wanted to be able to play an active role in my little brothers' lives rather than watching from the couch," she said. "I wanted to be able to be a mom one day. I wanted to be able to move without being in pain. I wanted to live instead of just exist."

Blair got started by counting calories and keeping a daily log of her meals, which led to her going on a keto diet that helped her lose 220 pounds in 17 months.

"At the end of the day when everything is all said and done, it's not about the weight you lose, it's about the life you gain," she said.

Stacey Welton, 50, knew she'd never be a gym aficionadonot with six kids and a full-time job as a teacher, at least. But once her weight began to give her health problems, she knew something had to give.

"I saw a picture of myself and wasn't happy," Welton told Best Life in July. "I knew that, as I was getting older, that the weight would continue to increase if I did nothing, so I made up my mind to change my life once and for all."

She went on the Atkins diet, which had her eating fewer carbsand in just eight months, she shed 80 pounds.

"I learned to eat to live, not live to eat," Welton said. "I would say that weight loss is one of the very few areas where it's OK to be selfish. It is about you. Whatever it costs, it's worth the personal investment in you. This is the sacrifice that a mom has to makenot only for herself, but her family."

As a kid, Jared Sklar loved to play sports. But when the 27-year-old fell in love with his girlfriend, Samatha MacDonald, he gained some relationship weight. All those late nights spent snacking on the couch with his parter left him at 285 pounds, and when he opened up his refrigerator one day and saw pizza boxes from four different restaurants, he decided something had to change.

"It's pretty embarrassing, but it's the truth," Sklar told CNN in August. "I just opened the door, and I was just like, 'What are we doing here?'"

Sklar and MacDonald decided to give intermittent fasting a try, eating all of their meals between noon and 8 p.m. They immediately noticed that their energy levels increased, and with even more of a drive to be active, the couple used the buddy system to go to the gym six days a week for 45 minutes of indoor cycling.

"We pushed each in our weak areas," MacDonald said. "We were on different pages initially but pushed each other to be on the same page, and that was a huge help."

MacDonald lost 12 pounds, and said that the mental health benefits of going to the gym are the real win for her. Meanwhile, Sklar lost 95 pounds in about seven months, and is now a fitness instructor teaching indoor cycling classes.

"It was hugely beneficial to have a support system with me," he said. "There are always going to be those days where you want to cheat and have a pizza, and just having a support system to keep you in check and being responsible for keeping somebody else in check was really important to me."

At nearly 200 pounds, Jennifer Riviera no longer had the energy to play with her 13-year-old sonand her weight was also taking a toll on her marriage.

"My husband and I weren't getting along because frankly, I made it really hard to love me because I stopped loving myself," Riviera told People in August. "Everybody became more important than I did and fast food became my way of life."

Then, two years ago, she saw a friend post about her weight loss journey and found it inspiring. Her friend recommended Isagenixa dietary supplement brand that makes meal replacement shakes. Now 115 pounds, Riviera is a full-time health and wellness coach who loves yoga. She says she continues to drink at least one Isagenix shake per day and, most importantly, she now has the energy to play with her son.

At 6'7" and 400 pounds, DeAndr Upshaw was a big presence in any room he walked into. "The coolest thing about calories in, calories out is that it was math," he told Men's Healthin January.

He also avoided escalators and elevators, and used a Fitbit to ensure that he took at least 10,000 steps a day. As a result, Upshaw lost 150 pounds in just one year, and now, he hopes to inspire others to put in the hard but rewarding work it takes to make a weight loss transformation. "I didn't lose 150 pounds once," he said. "I lost one pound 150 times."

Growing up, Vanessa Flores was always overweight. She tried several fad diets to slim down, but nothing stucka vegan diet helped her lose 60 pounds but proved difficult to maintain. But when she switched to a low-carb diet, which allowed her to have more carbs on days when she worked out, it was a whole different story. Since making that lifestyle change in 2013, Flores has lost 135 pounds, and she's still going.

"I think I started my weight loss journey for the wrong reasons," she told Women's Health in January. "Deep down, I just wanted a boyfriend and wanted to be prettier. But since then, I've realized my weight loss means so much more than that. I've not only gained more confidence, but I feel healthier than ever. Now, I feel like I can do anythingin a relationship or not."

By the time Sophie Trewick, 23, was in college, she weighed 331 pounds. But a 2017 trip to an amusement park was the last straw for the co-ed. "The staff at the theme park gave us all fast track passes so I didn't have to queue to see if I'd fit on each rollercoaster," Trewick told The Daily Mail in April. "One of my friends actually said to me 'I am glad you are fat as we get to jump straight to the front.' I went home that day distraught, and knew I had to change."

She cut out the junk food, began exercising three times a week, and joined the UK weight-loss organization Slimming World. According to a recent Instagram post, she's lost 101 pounds since 2017.

When she was eight years old, Desiree Alexis-Kae Mize was diagnosed with hypothyroidisma condition that affects approximately three million Americans and causes a variety of symptoms, including a slow metabolism. Remaining active often helped her lose weight, but eventually she'd gain it all back. By 21, Mize weighed 260 pounds, and her doctor suggested gastric bypass surgery, which would reduce the size of her stomach, making it easier to practice portion control.

At first, Mize felt like getting surgery would be the easy way out, but she decided to go through with it after hearing the inspiring success stories of women whose lives were changed by the procedure.

"I also learned that the surgery would help me with portion control, but my weight-loss would still require the discipline that I'd been working on my entire life," she told Women's Health in April. "The only difference was this time, I'd actually see results."

A year after the surgery, Mize has lost 150 pounds and continues to exercise and maintain a healthy diet. While the surgery got the ball rolling, it's been her responsibility to keep it moving forward, and she's proud to be doing the work.

"I feel like I'm finally happy and confident with myself and my body," she said. "I know gastric bypass surgery isn't the best choice for everyone, but it was the right choice for me, and it definitely wasn't the 'easy way out.' It not only helped me see results I never thought were possible because of my health conditionbut it has also helped me stay healthier by keeping my weight in check."

Many of us wake up on New Year's Day with the resolution to lose weight and get fit. But Quantel Thomas actually did it. Overweight since childhood and 300 pounds by the time he was 18, Thomas kicked off 2017 by starting a routine that found him at the gym six days a week, helping him to lose 180 pounds in 10 months.

Now weighing 204 pounds, he continues his bodybuilding and fitness regimen, and can bench press 285 pounds and deadlift up to 475 pounds. "To be able to love myself, that's the true, ultimate milestone achieved to this day," Thomas told Men's Health in November.

Randi Vasquez always struggled with her weight, but it never really bothered her until she got out of her "post-grad slump" in 2014 and realized her boozy brunches and weekend binges had brought her up to 240 pounds.

"I stared at myself in the mirror with tears in my eyes and asked myself, 'How did I let myself get like this?" Vasquez told Women's Health in March. "I always tried to blame it on my genes, but really, I was obsessed with fast food and I wasn't working out."

She kept trying to adopt healthier eating habits, and while she did lose some weight, it wasn't nearly as much as she wanted. Then her friend recommended Kayla Itsines' Bikini Body Guide program. From the first 28-minute workout, she was hooked.

"It was never easy, but I saw my body and mindset change so much and that kept me going," she said. "For the first time ever, I totally believed in myself and knew that I was capable of my weight loss goals." Her fitness regime inspired her to eat healthy, too. She does the Whole 30 diet when she falls off track and needs to get back to good patterns. All in all, Vasquez has lost 80 pounds, and gained more than 70,000 Instagram followers in the process.

"I've gotten out of my comfort zone and experienced a whole life that I never thought I'd be a part of," she recently wrote on Instagram. "While my belly may be a little fluffier today, I'm happy from where I started and eager to see where I'll end up."

In 2017, Jeremiah Peterson, 40, went on a hiking trip with his family and quickly found that he couldn't keep up with his young children.

"I had a kind of 'aha' moment," Peterson told The New Haven Register in April. "I reflected on what my life had been. I thought about what my life was at that very moment, and saw what I wanted my life to be."

At the time, his days were consumed by the antiques store he had opened with his wife, and his evenings were spent sitting around drinking beer. Weighing 290 pounds at the time, he decided to make some changes by going on the keto diet, cutting out all alcohol, and hiking in the great outdoors. Once he was in better shape, he began lifting weights again, and his body transformation has garnered him more than 113,000 Instagram followers. He certainly looks like he could run after his kids without losing his breath now.

"The road to your dreams isn't always going to be easy to accomplish," Peterson recently wrote on Instagram. "Just remember this if you get lost along the way: that anything worth having doesn't come easy. You have to be willing to dig down deep and do the work and most importantly never give up."

Back in May 2017, Jessica Simpson had an awkward interview on Ellen, in which she quashed pregnancy rumors related to her weight gain. The proud mother of three has frequently been the subject of vicious tabloid headlines mocking her post-kids physique. So in September, she rocked the internet when she revealed that she had "tipped the scales at 240" and was "100 pounds down" just six months after giving birth to her third child.

"[I'm] so proud to feel like myself again," Simpson wrote on Instagram. "Even when it felt impossible, I chose to work harder."

Lastly, its caffeine content is responsible for the drinks energy-boosting effect, positive influence on endurance exercise performance, and ability to increase the number of calories you burn, resulting in weight loss (3, 11, 12, 13).

Lemons are a great source of vitamin C and flavonoids, both of which act as powerful antioxidants (14).

Both vitamin C and citrus flavonoids have been linked to a lower risk of specific cancers namely esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and breast cancer (15, 16, 17, 18, 19).

Also, both compounds offer protection against heart disease, while vitamin C protects your immune system and helps fight infections (15, 19, 20, 21).

As you can see, coffee and lemons offer a wide range of benefits that protect your body from chronic ailments. Still, mixing the two doesnt necessarily translate to a more potent drink.

Coffee and lemons contain plant beneficial compounds with cancer-fighting properties. They may also protect you against chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

There are four main claims about the benefits of drinking coffee with lemon.

This is what science has to say about them.

This notion is prevalent among various trends that involve the use of lemon, but ultimately, neither lemon nor coffee can melt off fat.

The only way to get rid of unwanted fat is either by consuming fewer calories or burning more of them. Thus, this claim is false.

However, studies show that coffee may help you lose some weight, which is why some people may experience a slight weight reduction upon consuming the drink.

Recent research has found that caffeine may stimulate brown adipose tissue (BAT), a type of metabolically active fatty tissue that decreases with age and can metabolize carbs and fats (12).

One test-tube and human study determined that caffeine from a standard 8-ounce (240-mL) cup of coffee can boost BAT activity, causing an increase in metabolic rate that leads to weight loss (12).

Similarly, older studies from the 1980s and 1990s explain that caffeine may increase your metabolic rate during the 3 hours after ingesting it, upping your burned calories up to 811% meaning that you may burn an extra 79150 calories a day (22, 23, 24).

That said, the potential weight loss effect may be due to the caffeine in coffee, not the mixture of coffee with lemon.

Headaches and migraines have been ranked worldwide as major contributors to disability in those under 50 years old (25).

Hence, its common to find multiple home remedies for their treatment. Still, research is very divided when it comes to the use of coffee for this purpose.

One hypothesis suggests that the caffeine in coffee has a vasoconstrictor effect meaning that it tightens your blood vessels which reduces blood flow toward your head and relieves the pain (26).

Research also suggests that caffeine can amplify the effects of medication used for headaches and migraines (26, 27, 28).

Yet, another hypothesis believes that caffeine may act as a headache trigger for some, along with other beverages and foods, such as chocolate, alcohol, and citrus fruits like lemons (25).

Therefore, drinking coffee with lemon may either relieve or worsen a headache. And if it does help reduce pain, it would be again due to the caffeine in coffee, not the coffee and lemon drink itself.

This remedy calls for eating ground coffee with lemon instead of drinking it.

Still, theres currently no evidence to support the use of lemon to treat diarrhea, and coffee stimulates your colon, which increases your need to poop (29).

Additionally, diarrhea causes a significant loss of fluids that can lead to dehydration, which coffees diuretic effect may worsen (30, 31).

Research suggests that both coffee and lemons antioxidant content may provide skin benefits, so there seems to be a shred of truth behind this claim.

On one hand, coffees CGA content is believed to improve blood flow and hydration in the skin.

Studies show that its consumption may reduce skin scaliness, improve smoothness, and reduce the deterioration of the skin barrier (32, 33, 34).

On the other hand, lemons vitamin C content may stimulate the production of collagen a protein that provides your skin with strength and elasticity and reduce skin damage caused by free radicals that originate from sun exposure (15, 35, 36).

However, you may still take advantage of these benefits by consuming coffee and lemons separately, as no evidence suggests that the effect is only exerted when the two are mixed.

Coffee seems to be responsible for most of the purported benefits of drinking coffee with lemon, though lemons also play an important role in the skin care claims. Yet, no evidence suggests that they should be consumed together for greater benefits.

As is the case with their benefits, the downsides of drinking coffee with lemon are due to the drawbacks of each ingredient.

For instance, evidence suggests that heavy coffee drinkers may become addicted to caffeine, which is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a clinical disorder (37).

Further studies also indicate that regular caffeine intake is linked to sleep disturbances and associated daytime sleepiness, as well as an increased risk of pregnancy loss (7, 38).

As for lemons, while generally uncommon, some people may be allergic to citrus fruits juice, seeds, or peels (39).

While coffee and lemon are two highly consumed ingredients, coffee may impair sleep, cause caffeine addiction, and increase the risk of pregnancy loss. Meanwhile, lemons may cause allergies in rare cases.

Coffee and lemons offer a wide range of health benefits, mostly due to their antioxidant contents.

However, theres no evidence to support the claim that drinking coffee with lemon relieves diarrhea or causes fat to melt away.

As for the rest of the mixtures proclaimed benefits, they can be obtained by consuming coffee or lemon juice separately. Thus, theres no need to mix the two if you dont feel like it.

‘My 600-lb Life’: After suffering a heart attack, Coliesa’s weight-loss surgery hangs by a thin thread – MEAWW

Coliesa McMillian's weight has been a problem for her since a very young age and her mental health did not make it easy for her to take control over what she ate. She revealed that it all started with an alcoholic father who did not care enough for her. This was followed by an abusive husband, whom she managed to escape only after he was arrested.

To make things worse, when Coliesa thought that she had finally found a person who would love and care for her, she lost him in a car accident. With a series of events piled up one after the other that drains Coliesa out, it was no surprise that she turned to food for comfort. However, she knew that she could not continue living like this.

She made it clear that she wanted to lose weight and work hard on herself for the sake of her daughters. A mother of four, Coliesa knew that she had a lot of responsibilities up her sleeves but she was unable to take these because of her weight. After careful consideration, Coliesa finally decided to meet Dr Younan Nowzaradan.

Even though she found it hard to make it to Houston, she finally made it. When Coliesa first weighed herself, she was at 643 lbs. She was shocked and upset to look at her weight but she was happy as she realized that it could have been worse. She then met Dr Nowzaradan who questioned her about her food habits.

He then found out that Coliesa had a previous heart condition that dimmed the chances of her getting a surgery. He wanted to know what health problems she had in order to ensure that after she lost the weight, she would be able to undergo the surgery as well.

However, he wanted to first see if Coliesa was fully committed to losing the weight. He advised her to lose 50 lbs in a month and then come back for another consultation. He also gave her a diet chart and a series of exercises to do. For the first month, Coliesa worked hard to control her eating urges. She stated that she had reduced her food intake to three meals a day.

Meanwhile, she also started working out. However, she revealed that she was still having difficulties walking and refrained from continuing it. Finally, the day had come when she had to meet Dr Nowzaradan again. This time, she weighed 616lbs and had lost 27lbs. Coliesa was disappointed as she thought she would have lost more than that.

She told Dr Nowzaradan that she had been working hard and following the diet chart that he had given. However, Dr Nowzaradan did not agree. He told her that she would have lost more weight had she had been following the diet properly. Coliesa broke down crying as she felt that all her efforts were being futile.

Dr Nowzaradan asked her to work harder and not give up. Speaking to the camera, he stated that Coliesa was trying to manipulate herself and him by crying and it was important for her to work on herself. After her meeting with Dr Nowzaradan, Coliesa moved to Houston as she was focused on losing more weight.

Despite this, she was second-guessing her actions as she was worried that she was leaving everything behind and making a big move. Luckily, her youngest daughter motivated her to take the step and work on herself. Once Coliesa moved to Houston, she tried working hard in the same way. For her third consultation, she was advised to lose 50 lbs more.

However, this time, she weighed 591lbs and had lost 25lbs. Coliesa felt disappointed. Dr Nowzaradan suggested that she should meet a therapist and talk about what she had been feeling. Coliesa agreed and though the therapy made her better, her struggle was not over. A couple of days after the surgery, Coliesa started experiencing sharp abdominal pains.

She decided to go meet Dr Nowzaradan and revealed that she hadn't used the restroom for a couple of days. Dr Nowzaradan knew that he had to be treated immediately and admitted her in the hospital, which automatically brought her weight-loss journey to a halt.

After looking at her reports, Dr Nowzaradan realized that she might need surgery because she had a blockage but it was difficult for her to undergo surgery because of her health issues. He was concerned that her life could be put in danger if he did go ahead with the surgery. He further revealed that her weight loss was not like he had expected.

He advised Coliesa to watch her diet and try to stick to the chart. She said she was trying her best and hadn't had a lot of food like she usually does. However, Dr Nowzaradan warned her that her life would be in danger if she continued to eat like the way she did. He also gave her medications to help with her heart problems.

Coliesa agreed, but felt like Dr Nowzaradan was not seeing the efforts she was putting in. Despite this, she had hope that her life could be better once she lost weight. This motivated her to push herself again. Luckily for her, after a couple of days, Coliesa got the news that she was approved for the weight-loss surgery because her heart was strong enough.

She felt emotional and scared but knew that she was ready. Fortunately, the surgery was successful and Coliesa was advised to stay on a liquid diet for some time. A month after her weight-loss surgery, Coliesa confessed that she felt different and was doing everything on point ever since she returned from the hospital.

She further revealed that she has started taking walks outside and pushes herself as much as she can. For the first time, Coliesa was excited to meet Dr Nowzaradan. When she arrived at the hospital she realized that she had lost 25lbs and now weighed 499lbs. This was the first time she was below 500lbs and felt pleased with the efforts she had put.

Dr Nowzaradan asked her to continue her therapy while also working hard to lose weight. She promised to keep working hard and to make him proud. Coliesa confessed that she was feeling emotional and added that she was grateful it happened. Calling Dr Nowzaradan her angel, Coliesa was now ready to work harder than ever.

Seven minutes. It isnt a very long time (though apparently if you are a teenager in a closet its all you need.) But it is also the perfect amount of time for an effective workout, according to science.

The 7-minute workout was first written about in 2013in the American College of Sport Medicines Health and Fitness Journaland then the media was all over it. After all, it touted real results including weight loss, higher endurance and stronger cardiovascular and muscular fitness. And lets not forget, it only takes seven minutes!

Of course, the appeal of the time length of the workout was quite appealing when we were all on-the-move, busy people and only had seven minutes to spare. Now we perhaps have a bit more time but when working from home and trying to be productive a quick burst of energy is the perfect anecdote to sitting all day and/or trying to wrangle children into playing the quiet game for the 25th time.

The 7-minute workout consists of 12 high-intensity exercises (HIIT) where the person is only using their body weight as resistance. Like any HIIT workout, you will be alternating between 30-second to one-minute bursts of maximum energy (85% or more exertion level so you are basically working to the point where you want to die) followed by a brief 10-second rest period. The main appeal is that you are getting the same or close to the benefits of a longer workout but in a condensed amount of time.Heather Tyler, an NSCA-certified personal trainer and owner of Simply Fit LA told USA Today it should feel like, You know that feeling like youve run up five flights of stairs, your hearts pounding in your ears, youre dripping sweat and you sound like a donkey wheezing?

Some of these benefits besides weight loss and fat reduction include helping those who are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. When you do a micro-HIIT workout it cleans out your damaged cells and helps to regenerate newer, healthier ones. So this 7-minute workout could actually be adding years to your life.

Plus research shows micro-HIIT workouts is associated with thereduction of neurodegenerative diseases and the treatment of cancer.

These workouts can be a combination of several different moves or you can focus on one but here are a few classics for the 7-minute workout:

Jumping jacks

Squats

Planks

Wall-sit

Push-ups

Crunches

Triceps

High Knees

Lunge

Side plank

Burpees

Bicycle crunches

Windmill

You basically want to perform as many reps of these workouts in 30 seconds (to a minute) with five to 10 seconds of rest in between.

Plus, you can do these workouts anywhere (though you may want to move some furniture out of the way.) In your home office, while you are waiting for water to boil, or in your yard.

But remember, if you are doing these workouts right (and daily repetition is the key), you should not be feeling good (when you are doing them that is) and immediately after.Wendy Wood, a professor of psychology and business at the University of Southern California, told LiveScience, The trick with this or any other exercise program is tomake it habitual an unthinking part of your daily routine, she said. Once habits form, then the discomfort becomes relatively unimportant.

Your diet should be rich in protein, carbs and fats to both fuel you and aid recovery from your training. Add sprinkles of foods and drinks that you really enjoy, and you will be much less likely to fall off the wagon and have a binge.

Set fitness goals

The expert said: Work towards fitness goals; run a 5k or an obstacle race, work towards lifting those bigger dumbbells, try out those intermediate speeds in the treadmill class you take.

Always strive to be better than the person you were yesterday. The moment your focus shifts to getting better at fitness, you will find you start walking with a whole new swagger; youll be shocked at how getting fitter and stronger changes how you see yourself in the mirror.

You might just start seeing the beginnings of that beach body in a matter of weeks.

Train with a friend

She said: Its very easy to back out of a workout when they only person you are accountable to is yourself. Less easy to let a friend down for that 7am class.
